So I'm going to be putting a 3 inch body lift on my truck within a few weeks as soon as I get my new radiator core support put into my truck on Friday. I know how to lift the front bumper, and of course the kit comes with brackets. But how do I lift the rear bumper? And the aftermarket frame-mounted trailer hitch?
When I did the body lift on my 95 F-150 I just moved the rear bumper straight up on the frame and drilled some new holes. Unfortunately, you can't raise the receiver hitch.
Unfortunately, you can't raise the receiver hitch.
this is correct...
You dont want to raise the hitch, if you use it anyways. Then you need a drop hitch and all the other BS along with it. For the extra hundred bucks that all costs you could do a suspension lift, But then need it also- lol. I don't think low receivers look bad. The gap under the bed is the worst looking part of a body lift.
IF you are a competent welder(but doesn't sound like you are, other wise you wouldn't of asked), you can cut off the receiver tube and locate it higher up.
Sure, I will grab a pic tomorrow and post it. Also, beware of our pesky bumper height laws here in MN. It can't be over 25" off the ground. A State Trooper stopped me and gave me a ticket for mine. I ended up having to building a drop bumper that attaches to my hitch. Here's whatit looks like from behind with the body lift, raised bumper, and the drop bumper attached. It's hard to see, but I actually had my exhaust run between the bumper and the receiver hitch.
Ok, here's a pic of how I raised the bumper. First, I used some regular 1/2 inch bolts instead of the original ones. There is actually already a hole in the frame there that I used for the rear bolt, but it is quite a bit larger than the bolt so I used a large washer and nut on the inside of the frame. Once I had the rear bolts in place, I adjusted the bumper so it was level and then drilled the front holes. You can see in the pic I had to drill a new hole in both the bumper bracket and the frame because the original hole in the bumper bracket is too high up on the frame.
Great, thanks for the pics. I did notice that hole that is above the original mounting location for the bumper when I looked underneath my truck the other day. And drilling a new hole for the front bolts is no problem. Sounds easy enough. I think I am just going to take off my hitch when I do the lift. I'll clean it up and paint it then I'll sell it and buy a "body lift hitch" that I found on that website.
And what part of MN do you live in? I live up in the northern part and I have seen trucks around here with 6" of lift with bumper heights well over 25" and it seems like the police around here could care less.
