Hello again!! I have the motor in where i think is good! It look like the trans would be level with the bottom of the frame. My question is how do you think i should make the crossmember? Sould i use a piece of angle iron and cut the section out and lower it so i could bolt it to the mount?

I tried to search and look up post but nothing really helps. Im sitting here waiting for answers!!! Please let me know Thanks. Im going to upload pics to photobucket of the motor mounts i did.

there's quite a few xmembers on ebay, tube and flat style. the one thing to remember is without the original crossmember you wiil get lots of frame flex.

I would suggest a lower member to set the tranny and an upper one to keep the frame from twisting. as the easiest solution. search around there's quite a few different ideas on the board.

I was wondering about the frame flex!! It would not hurt to add one to the top as well.

Have you thought about boxing the frame near that section or would it not be enough room for the brake lines and cables?

I was looking at some channel , I saw on the bay a crossmember with a C-Channel that fit's inside our frame and is bolted top and bottom and a bent tube for the mount..ya follow? Best easiest Idea I've found so far..

Hey Bob, i have the second one you listed! But i paid more for mine! I put that in but the trans sits higher. I might cut it up and add metal to cross the frame.

Its funny how things hit you sometimes! I took the tranny crossmember i have and just laid it on its side on my welding table and traced it with soapstone. Measured what the drop was on it and was kinda looking at where to cut and weld and so on. It will be boxed on the ends as well!

Ok well let me add a couple things as food for thought.

First, in order to mount your C6, youare going to have to cut out the existing transmission cross member.

This a a very stout cross member and not only supports the transmission, but also provided substantial bracing support to the frame.

You are going to have to replace that support and I'll tell you right off the bat that the tube type transmission supports aren't going to be stout enough to do that. So, you are going to have to either build something to brace your frame in the center and use the tube type just to hold the transmission up, or incorporate the two.

How do I know this? I have a 390/C6 in my 51 and have the tube type mount. One day I was turning around on my sloped driveway to back my truck into the garage. When I shifted out of drive and into reverse to back up the hill, the entire front left corner of my truck twisted and lifted up like I had driven up a foot tall shop stand with it. The guy who does my springs told me I definately needed a cross brace to stabilize the frame. I'm working on it.

why not add another "tranny mount" or the like to the top of the frame?

I used 2x2 square tubing with off sets to mount my trans it seemed to work out plus it replaced the stock tranny mount. by the way the truck looks good.

I don't want to sound like the frame police but I think these frames should be boxed front to back, after that, flexing is never a concern, JMHO

It is awesome to have so much help and wisdom of members who have already been there done that.

If anyone has information on putting a toploader in a 1951 F1 with a 351C I would appreciate it. This work lies ahead for me.
