If you are shopping for a 2008 to 2010 Ford truck, you should know about the 6.4L PowerStroke diesels. The 6.4L PowerStroke Diesel engine found in 2008-2010 Ford Superduty trucks produces 350 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and 650 ft/lbs of torque at 2,000 rpm. My engine with the EGR delete and SCT Tuner probably puts out around 500 horspower and 850 ft/lbs of torque. Not sure, haven't dyno-ed it.
The common problem with the 6.4 is that Ford, from the factory designed a Diesel Particulate Filter for the exhaust that normally starts to plug up and cause an exhaust restriction. The factory solution for this condition is to, under certain driving conditions--steady highway speed, normal operating temperature--add extra diesel fuel to the two rear most cylinders in the V8, to "cook" the particulates out of the DPF. The problem with this factory set-up is that extra fuel washes away the oil on those cylinders and winds up in the oil pan, diluting the lubricating oil. This can cause premature engine failure. This is why there are so many "delete" kits for sale.
My truck is registered in South Dakota where smog checks are not required.
I bought this truck to move our toy hauler south after we sold our home in Los Angeles where we lived for 20 years. It is currently not parked or driven on public roads. I am building our new home. I do not need such a powerful truck anymore. I have a 1958 Chevrolet 1/2 ton Panel Truck that I have owned for over 35 years and I am restoring AGAIN. This time, 454 BBC, 4L80E trans, 9 inch Ford rear, 4 wheel disc brakes, 1970 Camaro front clip grafted in for independent front suspension, disc brakes and power steering.
I have been an automotive technician for over 41 years. I owned two automotive businesses in Malibu, California fro 10 years. I am now retired, but very busy building our new home.
If you have hung in this far, I would recommend you take a look at J&K's website. They improve on the stock Ford engine with ARP head studs, billet chromoly pushrod set and improved design pistons. Also check out 805 Diesel's website. Diesel trucks are all they do, and they do an excellent job. I have receipts.
