First of all this is my first of many post. I just want to thank everyone of all the help I know yal will give me.
I have never rebuilt a truck before but i thought to myself if I dont start somewhere i will never learn. Does anyone have any tips on converting a 79 F250 form 2wd to 4wd? I have a 75 model that has a front end that I can use and I just bought a divorce transfer case to keep form having to change the tranny. the 79 has a 460 in it that needs a fuel pump. If there is any tricks or tip please let me know. I will post pic of the truck as I go.
The big problem is the frame and steering. It has that enormous crossmember for the twin I beam that is in the way of the front axle with out extensive cutting and modification. This question comes up often and the general consensus is that it can be done with extensive fabrication but it is cheaper and faster to find a used 4x4 and swap in the parts you want to keep.
so you would say that I should put motor, tran, & transfer case on the 4wd frame. Ive never done that how hard would that be. I would like to paint the frame and motor so it would be easier to do that I guess. my only fear is re wireing the motor and everything else. I have friends that could help i guess.
Welcome to the group. I would have to agree with 4x4Bart, Find a rolling 4x4 frame to use, it will be much easier and you will still learn alot. The wiring won't be that much of an issue if you use the 79 F250 cab to put on the 4x4 frame the main wiring harness will stay with the cab.
Thanks for the help. I will keep u guys informed on how things go. I will need alot of help with all this so this will not be my last post. How long should i expect it to take to change body over? as well as parts? also can i still us the divorce transfer case and 2wd tranny? or should i look for a 4wd tranny and married transfer case?
The cab and bed can be moved to the new frame easily with the proper help and prep work, unbolting or cutting off the old cab mounts and radiator support mounts and bed bolts can take some time. I can't answer the transmission and transfer case question. You might get some goodies that come with the new 4x4 frame.
the 2wd trans does not have the correct mounting pt. on the tailshaft of the trans.for the 4wd transfer case shifter, not saying you can't use it but you will have to fabrictae a mounting bracket as well as a driveshaft, the highboy set up utilizes a d/s that is bolted in w/ a yoke vs. the slip in of the 2wd,...again.... another fabrication, another option is to get a 78/79 3/4 ton 4wd frame, utilze a auto trans w/ a married transfer case for the newer yr frame and then you won't have to also 'fabricate' the pwr. steering upgrade for the 75 4wd frame
if you are willing to travel or have it shipped...I have a 78/79 4wd frame for sale, probably most of the other things you may need...
thanks for the infor if u didnt live so far away i would be intrested in the frame and other parts. Ill keep my eyes open for a 4wd tanny and a married transfer case.
