Does anybody have any ideas where to start. I had a cab that someone hacked at all the wiring so i took the old wiring harness out of my cab that worked before I took the body off for resto and am in the process of putting it back. Now I have issues I can get the wipers and some in cab lights to come on but the engine wont crank and heater wont come that is all I ve tried so far.. I was frustrated and left (like I am lucky enough for it to just work) I checked all the plugs everything seems to be plugged in, connections tight but Ill double check again does anyone have any ideas where I can start just dont want to over look something simple. thanks
Am I understanding correctly that there is only 1 harness and 1 cab involved here? In other words you aren't trying to swap a different harness from one year cab to another?
Get a simple test light and check for power on both sides of the fuses at the fuse block. To check all of them, you will have to turn your ignition key to run/start/ acc etc. If your fuses check out OK follow the wires to the switch of the component that isn't working. If you have power to the switch and component, check the ground circuit for that component. Double check all connectors and grounds.
Also check for power at the red wires going into the ignition switch.
When you check for power at the small wire at the starter solenoid, you will need a helper to hold the ignition switch in the start position.
You may need a good wiring diagram to help follow all feed and ground wires.
Am I understanding your initial post? You are re-installing the hacked wiring into your truck? If that is the case, my recommendation would be to remove it and obtain a new harness from a reputable supplier, and install that harness per manufacturer directions.
Next suggestion would be to obtain a build manual that includes the wiring system. These are usually available through Ebay, or online resources. Retrace all of your wires according to the appropriate wiring diagram.
I rewired my truck using a new harness. Even with a new harness, I had a co0upl;e of problems. Most of them were related to grounds and using old fixtures such as old tail lights, etc.
I would have to agree with just replacing the harness. If the harness was hacked up enough, it may be an endless project and even if you do get things to work OK, chances are things will pop up later. Remember, when harnesses get hacked up, usually there is a problem and the person who did the hacking can't find the problem or chooses not to and starts to just do the hacking in order to temporary solve a problem which leads to other things.
To clear things up I took out the hacked harness and replaced it with the harness from my orginal cab the one that is used with the same everything but the cab. I know this harness was good so I switched them over the hacked harness is out of the truck. I think I have a ground issue but I have not done any tracing yet just thought I wood get opinions from everyone here to see if it was simple and could save me the headache.
You most likely do have a grounding issue. When I replaced my harness with a brand new one, I didn't have anything work until I made sure all of the grounding was correct. Make sure there is a good ground from battery to engine (negative bat cable), then engine to body with at least a good grounding strap or a heavier gauge wire and then a ground from body to chassis. Once you have that, the main grounding system is complete. Then for the individual ground wires make sure you have good clean metal and go from there.
