My 300 inline 6 is starting to give me lifter noise. I can hear it at all times but it gets particularly bad when the oil is hot and I shut it off for 30 min, then start it back. After 1 min or so, it settles back down but I can still hear it stapping. As a young guy, I remember simply tightening the nut on the rocker slightly to take the play out. Do I need to be more careful than this and use a feeler gauge or is it ok just to make a small adjustment. By the way, this is a hunting truck/buggy, not for road use.
Also, I have another small V8 that is doing the same thing (it's an AMC 360) so your advice for the 300 will apply to both engines, hopefully.
How often do you change the oil? They may be starting to gum up a little inside, which will make them less responsive and cause clicking. Try running some Marvel's Mystery Oil or another good cleaner through the oil to see if it helps clean them up.
Any more input on this, still getting the lifter slap/ticking and sure wish there was something that would eliminate or soften the noise. When i start it cold the oil pressure is 60 and when it gets hot, drops down to 35 psi at which point the noise is less but still very noticeable. I just put 2/3 can of seafoam in the crankcase and ran it for 1.5 hrs, didn't notice any improvement.

In the US, some guys choose to go to an auto parts store and get a replacement cam for the switch for around $20:
