Its time to change oil and I am considering going to a 5W40 syn for the hard starts during the cold mornings. It gets down to single digits here in Kansas but will also see temps in the 60 deg range a few days in the next couple months. Is the 5W40 going to be OK for the 50-60 degree days or do I need to stay with 15w40?
There should be no difference on the higher temp side of things. Synthetics are said to flow better in low temps and not break down as fast on high end temps which could be a plus with air cooled engines, turbos, etc.
Go for it year round.. your engine will love it.. I will never go back to 15w40.. !!
I'm just the opposite, I went back to 15W-40 and not sure if I'll do synthetic again. I may, but so far this winter it's been fine. It was in the teens one morning and it was just fine. Then again I don't live where it's constantly below 30 degrees either.
My local Auto Zone has the Rotella-T for the same price as Wally World, and since I hate that place I just get it at Auto Zone and use my rewards card with the program they have there. Every 5th time I spend $20 there I get a $20 credit.
Try it -- you'll like it. Listen to your truck after it first starts up with the dino, then listen with the syn in it. Especially when it's cold. Another neat trick is to put a little syn & dino in the freezer (or outside if it's really cold where you are), then pour them both out. You may be surprised.
I run the Dino year around and get it at WW it has gone up to $11.50 a gallon. I also just stopped at my local IH dealer and picked up the Fleetguard LF3630 oil filter for $12.64 and a Fleetguard fuel filter for $21.80. I never had problems with the Dino but always think about trying syn but thats $32.00 more per oil change if you change at 5000 miles. But you can also go longer on Syn so it may be worth it.
Loyal synthetic user since 15,000, my truck now has 132,000 on it and my UOA's wear numbers are fantastic, go for it. This previous change I tried out the Schaeffers 7000 synthetic blend, good stuff also if you can find it, dealers and certain small shops you can find it.
