Thermostat Gasket on 92 Ranger 4 Liter? --> Never mind
The Ford dealer shows that the gasket is a rubber O-ring that goes around the thermostat body -- not a paper gasket between the housing and the engine block. Does anybody know if this is right? I had to scrape off a paper gasket to remove the thermostat that was already there. Either Ford made a change, or the previous thermostat was installed improperly?!?

On my '98, there was only the rubber O-ring gasket, and nothing else. But I went ahead anyway and used some Permatex Water Pump & T-Stat Gasket Maker RTV Sealant, which worked great. Better safe than sorry. Make sure you torque the bolts evenly (9-12 Nm, 77-110 Lb-In).

Do you remember if there was a recess in the housing for the o-ring? Mine is basically two flat surfaces so it looks like the design is to smush the o-ring, and the housing and block wouldn't actually be touching.

Never mind! -- It finally dawned on me when I was scratching my head looking at the gasket and wondering how in the world it could work -- that I have a 3.0 NOT a 4.0 engine!! 
Now I have the right gasket/thermostat and everything is running fine.
