4X4 Electronic Module

I have a 2000 Ford Expedition and I have had problems with the 4x4 system. The 4x4 light would flash on and off while I was driving and the car would jump whenever I would turn. I got the problem checked Friday and was told I need to replace the electronic module and it would cost me approx. $600. Is this the average cost for this or is the mechanic screwing me? And how urgently do I need to get this replaced? Thanks.

If they're talking about your GEM module, that's probably about right. You can often find the GEM's cheaper on ebay such as this one. 2000-2002 FORD EXPEDITION 4X4 GEM MODULE YL14-14B205-AB:eBay Motors (item 290362311978 end time Nov-20-09 19:17:46 PST)

You could change this out yourself, but they're kind of a pain to access. If you're willing to give it a shot, do a search and you'll find all sorts of info.

They could be talking about the 4WD relay module and not the GEM. To me it sounds like the front clutch for the 4WD system is kicking in and out at random.

Who ruled out a bad dash selector switch or the shift motor? Was this a dealer with the proper scan tools, or a local mechanic that was just making an educated guess?

I took it to a local mechanic who I was referred to. He hooked up a computer to my car and scanned it.

Sorry for taking so long to reply again, but I have some more info. Whenever I put the truck in 4Hi, the 4x4 light comes on and stays lit until I take it out of 4Hi. Whenever I put the truck in 4Low, the Low Range light comes on in addition to the 4x4 light and I hear it kick into 4Low. I also hear it kick out of 4Low when I take it out of 4Low. The 4x4 light only flashes on and off when the switch is in A4WD.

I found a TSB on my truck and the problem with the 4x4 light flashing and the hopping while turning are 2 symptoms listed on the TSB. Do you still think it could be the shift motor? Thanks for the help.

Straight from the TSB you posted.

ISSUE:
Some vehicles may exhibit inadvertent 4X4 Hi or Low shift events, 4X4 and/or Low Range indicator flashing or solid or vehicle stuck in 4L after uncommanded shift. This may be caused by the 4X4 shift motor.

ACTION:
Install a YL1Z-7G360-AA shift motor on vehicles built before 12/99. The YL1Z-7G360-AA shift motor with a grey contact plate cover replaces the prior design F75Z-7G360-AA motor with a blue contact plate cover. Grey cover shift motors contain improved sense plate material and shift motor terminal upgrade. For vehicles already equipped with the latest style shift motor, refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
