The GF got a 1999 Expy with a 5.4 4x4 179K ran great until this friday, took it on a 900 mile ride to her family in PA. It ran great there and some of the way home. I was pushing it a bit on the way home about 80-90mph for an hour or two and when we got caught in traffic after slowing to a stop the truck would not go. It slipped bad from idle. If you ever drove a drag car with 3000+ stall converter in it that what it felt like just not as smooth. I stopped and checked fluid and it was fine, I eased it back onto the highway set the cruise on 65 and made it the next 185 miles home.
I have been searching and searching and according to the door sticker it has a 4R100 trans (code E). Is this a common issue? Whats the fix? Need a new trans?
Just tried it. Does not move at all, reved to 3K and nothing.
There's an outside chance the torque convert is broken. But when that happens you can usually hear some kind of noise from it or you'd have a vibration. So more likely than not, with these symptoms at 179K it's going to need a tranny rebuild or junkyard swap.
