Here's my problem i have a 2001 expedition and it runs pretty good.just lately i've noticed at times i get in to start it up and it would start fine other times I put the key in to start it and it makes this loud screeching noise like the noise a vehicle makes when you forget it's already running and subconciously you turn the key over again.I was told it may have an aftermarket auto starter in it and somehow engaging, then was told it may be the starter, then told it may be flywheel.I am trying to avoid going to the ford dealer but also want to be steered in the right direction, any suggestions on where i should start? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Starter is the easier and cheaper thing to replace. I did mine in an hour's time: that's driving the truck up on ramps, disconnecting the neg battery cable, getting tools out, and actually doing the job. There is a thread on here where someone took photos and some notes that help. Just remember there are three bolts holding the starter on. One is on top and is the "hidden" bolt. Spray them all down with penetrating oil first. Use various 3/8 extensions and you can get right on it without utilizing a universal joint. In fact I think I might have used a 1/2" ratchet and extension because I needed the bigger tool to break bolts loose. I'll search for that thread in the mean time.
Also, I do want to mention I had the EXACT same problem as you were experiencing. I would have the occasional and very random grind. Since I replaced the starter, I have experienced the grinding only once. I think I may have one bad tooth on the flywheel but replacing the starter has helped.
