I recently purchased a 99 Expedition EB with only 40k miles. The previous owner agreed to pay for replacement of the brakes all around and the 45k service. I have talked to many dealers and service shops and cannot get a consistent answer on what the 45k service should cover (what could become a problem, and what should I look at now). Additionally, he has agreed to do the brakes. The problem is that I hear rumors that there are much better pads out there, as well as pads to stay away from. Any ideas on price, parts, or general advice. Any help is much appreciated!
Hi Congrats on your new purchase. This is just a list off the top of my head but I would:
1) Change ALL the fluids (Drain and flush where neccessary)
2) Change ALL filters (Air, Oil,Fuel)
3)Brakes: Autozone Carbon Metallic (Front only). Fairly simple install. About $50.00 for the pads with a lifetime warranty on the pads.
4)Check the sway bar links(they have a tendency to snap off)
5)You could also get the injectors cleaned.
6)Keep an eye on the pass side of the engine for the dreaded head leak.
If I can think of anything else I'll let you know. I am sure someone else can add to this too.
This applies to the scheduled maintenance only- I'll let every one else discuss the brakes. Assuming the previous owner followed the maintenance schedule and did everything necessary at 30,000 miles, there's very little you need to do at 45,000. At 30k they should have changed oil, rotated tires, replaced air and fuel filters, and changed the fluid and filter in the tranny. If not, then you definitely want to get these things addressed now. One more tip: lower that spare tire and get some white lithium grease on the crank-down mechanism. Everyone forgets this til 6 years from now when you have your first flat and guess what: IT DON'T MOVE!! It'll be rusted solid.
