truck pullin

just wonderin if anyone on here would have some advice for a rookie to the pullin world. tips and tricks welcome. would like to build the truck in my sig to be a decent puller but still drive it on the road.

It all depends on what class you are going to run. Around here any thing over 6000 pounds is in the heavy wieght class. Also if you have a dually your in the heavy wieght class. I have entered two of my rigs in the pulls. When I pulled with the van I only pulled 130% of its wieght. It powered out. I'm runnin a NP435 and a BW tcase I had it in low range in 2nd gear. Its hard to say if its possable to build a good puller and have it a good driver too. People around here basically run weld tube between the axle and the frame.

I pull pretty much the same truck, (mines an 89 w/ 4" lift and hooker LTs) and the first 2 things to look at getting for pulling are tires and traction bars. As far as tires go, i had my best pull so far on a set of stock p235/75r16 goodyear wrangler workhorses. If you plan on sticking w/ larger tires, you need to go w/ ATs. mud terrains will bite too much, and they will cause the truck to wheelhop.
and traction bars. GET THEM!!! I pulled w/ stock suspension, and i could not prevent the wheelhop, no matter what tires i ran. added traction bars, and it was like a night and day difference. no more rear wheelhop w/ AT tires, and the whole pull seemed much sturdier/firmer. heres a pic of my trac bars, i got them from farmboyfabrications.com I know the owner of the shop and he makes some of the highest quality stuff ive ever seen.

Oh and i forgot. Once you do these 2 things, thats about all you need to do to the truck, drivetrain wise. After this, its time for engine work.

As far as what gear i would recommend, Honestly i really couldnt tell ya. My farthest pull when i was on my stock tires, i was in 2nd gear. BUT, i had my firmest pull yet doing it in 1st gear, but i did not pull as far.

is your motor stock rebel? how long are those traction bars, i am wanting to make my own.

motor is stock, except for the already mentioned hooker comp long tube headers, and MSD TFI coil. Been well maintained, and regasketed, but other than that bone stock. I want to say the trac bars are 5-6ft long. you should really check out that website i posted, he does great work

thanks, im fixin to build a motor this winter and hopefully do a gear swap since i have 3.55 and im gonna get some new 33s. while the motors out im gonna do traction bars and prolly drop the rear block just cause i dont like it being there. thanks for the tips.
