axle swap like for like 1950 f1
axle swap like for like 1950 f1
Hi can anybody tell me what standerd axle will drop straight into my 1950 f1,eg from a 48 to 51 f1 we be ok ?, what about f100 or f250s from 1951 to 1956, just for the time being would like it to be a straight swap just to get it up and running for some shows we have planned, trouble is over here I am very limited to what I can get hold of, so the more options I have the better.
Thanks
Thanks
i see no one has replied, i'm not sure of any that is a straight, no modification swap. but the 48-52 axles should work.
here is a chart to help you find one with the correct width.
this is a 9" axle chart.

if anything, i just bumped it to the top for someone else to help
depending on your screan res, if you cant read those charts, i can send you the word doc.

You are asking about rear end swap? not the front, right?
If so it looks like mostly52f1 has got you heading in a good direction.
I will just add this and the link to the second sticky down from the top page, the "Read First FAQ" 1948 through 1960 Ford F-1 and F-100 Rear Axle (differential) Swaps .: Articles
(from the link above) I believe if you want the easiest no modifications swap look for a 9" rear end from a 1968 through 1972 F-150 2 wheel drive, but any F100 F150 9" FROM 1957 and up should bolt directly in only difference from the 68-72 is the shock mount tabs will need to be welded on. so may not be a big deal, but just depends on personal choice and availabilty?
Hope this helps, good luck
Josh
One thing I forgot to mention but you will probably read if you click the link is the wheel bolt patterns, if you are staying with the stock wheels then you definitly want to stay with the truck rear end, since I believe all of the cars have the 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern vs the original 5 on 5.5" pattern.
I hope to be doing this swap also, soon as I make some time

I might be able to get hold of a 1954 f100 rear axle thats just been rebuilt, can anybody tell me if this will be a straight swop into my 1950 f1, I have yet to see the axle but a few pointers would not go amiss.
Thanks again

I dont know for certain, but I would think so?? double check your measurments and go measure up this 54 axle. another thing to keep in mind would be using the driveshaft? can or will the one you currently have still work with something else??? I.E. the 54
just curious though why you need/want to swap out the axle? usually people do it just to get different gearing, (I think?) do you not have a rear axle currently?
The 54 gearing may not be any better than the stock 50?

i'm not 100% on the swap either, if anything, the shock mounts are different. i'm pretty sure the leaf perches are the same(dont hold me to it tho) i looked at a frame diagram from a 50, and one from a 54, the frames are the same width(in the back) so the leafs spring perches should be in the same spot.
i do know you will not be able to use the 54 leaf springs on your 50, they are 3 inches longer.
i'm also curious of why..

Thanks guys, the answer to your questions, well the diff in mine is worn and also have a rumbull at the halfshaft bearings,in all a overhaul is required,to get a 8 or 9 inch over here is hard at the best of times, then will have to go down the route of handbrake cables, propshaft, mounts for the axle etc, there is very few places to get a rebuild done on my axle, as the rest of the truck is in good order I would like to get my f1 up and running for this years shows then work out what I will be doing next year to it ,maybe lowering it, power steer etc
oh wow, i just noticed your in england lol.
i wish you good luck on your axle hunt. i'm gonna try to do a bit more research to help you, if i can find something that is a 100% swap i'll post it here.

Just a update really, had a bit of luck, found through a web site over here a axle out of a 1954 f100, and only 40 odd miles from us,it had been set up with a 4 bar links so could not use the axle caseing but all the internals are the same just a slight difference in the ratio, having it rebuilt now. Thanks for all the info you guys gave me.
