My neighbour finally got rid of his GM half ton. Guess what he bought! A 2008 F250 crew cab long box Ford with the 5.4L in it. Traded at Moosomin Ford, same town he bought the GM from. The Ford has around 50,000 kms on it, so there is a little warranty left. He decided his GM was too light for the oil patch, and seen the Fords working fine, so decided to try one. He is actually quite pumped to drive his new truck, he picks it up on Friday.
Im sure with a 5.4 he wouldnt have a lemon. In a f250 I would be a little worried about the power of a 5.4, and might have went to a v10 personally. (thats if for some crazy reason I didnt buy another diesel!)
if a guy isn't towing much or anything, i think the 5.4 would be fine with proper gearing. i can't see those trucks weighing much more than our '08 F150's. i'd be thinking of a v10 before a diesel nowadays with all the EPA bullspit on them giving them such lousy mileage. Hopefully Ford can rectify those problems with their new "in-house" 6.7 scorpion!!
i want a diesel Prep... uncertain about what to get though. 7.3--hard to find a low mileage one and they're like gold... 6.0--bad rep, doesn't bother me, but should i take a chance?? 6.4--seems like a solid winner, but the mpg sucks until a dpf delete/tune.
i have read of some guys with the F259's, CC, short box and the 3.55/3.73 read ends getting 17-18mpg with the latest flashes in stock trucks. thats respectable. the only other problem is will the 6.4 be obsolete once Ford brings their own beef to the chopping block??
i wonder if the v10 will get replaced with something??

I know exactly where your coming from. I am in the market for a 1 ton diesel dually crewcab longbox right now. Need something for pulling the backhoe, something where I dont have to use the dump truck ALL the time, plus it will be a business truck for delivering tanks and pipe and whatnot.
But what to get. I would love another 7.3 but its like you said, the miles on them.
Would love the power and towing of a 6.0 liter, but its like you said, does a guy take the chance(specially when just starting a new business!)
The 6.4 would be great but will a guy need to take a second career as a p1mp to be able to afford fuel in it?!
Im gonna try and wait before I choose, that or get something cheap from a ritchie brothers auction and take my chances.
I know of a cheap fairly lo mileage 2001 cheby 1 ton diesel dump that`ll be coming up for sale possibly soon.
It`s cheap for a reason though, nothing but problems with it. It was replaced by a new F350.
Ford would really have to screw something up HUGE for me to swap to a different brand. So far with my trucks, ford has been rock solid reliable, hard to switch a guy from that!
