Talking 351w Swap Help Please

Hello all--
I used the search function and could not find anything so I am asking for some help.

I just purchased an 89 Bronco and am swaping the 89 351w that came in it for a 92 351w out of a F250.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good service/shop manual to walk through the process (online version preferably)? I have a Haynes manual but looking for as much info as I can gather.

Any insight or other info would be appreciated. I am doing this project with my brother who has done a lot of work on Miatas and is currently building up a 73 Porsche and a Shelby so we have mechanical experience just not Bronco specific knowledge.

Thanks in advance.
Tom

It's couldn't be much simpler, remove the old motor and put the new one in. Be sure to use the flywheel/flexplate from the '89, your accessory brackets, and the '89 distributor, everything else is identical. it's worth the effort to go get a service manual, I like Chiltons over Haynes.

Thumbs up Thanks.

Hey Conanski--
Thanks for the info. I will take the parts off the 89 motor you recommended and put them on the 92 for the swap.

I'll dig up a Chilton manual as well.

Hey Conanski--
I've gone through all the steps listed in my Haynes manual to prep the engine for removal. Nothing seems to be holding the engine in but...

When I try to lift it out, it seems still mated with the tranny and won't come loose.

Any insight with what might be wrong or something I missed?

Thanks in advance for your help.

im not sure which tranny you have but if its an auto there are 4 or 6 bolts depending on which trans that hold the torque converter to the flexplate so youll have to take the inspection plate off the front lower part of the trans and rotate the engine and take each nut off untill they all come out and then it should all come apart. also make sure you have all the trans bellhousing to engine bolts disconnected as there are quite a few. you can pull the engine out with the torque converter still attached but it will be alot more difficult and will make a big mess. also on these trucks its usually easier to try to slide the engine forwards a little bit before lifting straight up to avoid the intake smacking the firewall and to make it come apart from the trans easier

To remove the engine make sure all items below are disconnected, and then lift the motor slightly off the mounts and wiggle it while pulling forward to disconnect it from the tranny. It really helps to have somebody handle the motor as another pulls the hoist back.

To be disconnected:
Engine mounts - 4 bolts
trans - 6 bolts
TQ converter - 4 bolts
Engine block ground wire - 1 bolt pass side
Starter - 3 bolts(2 mount 1 wire)
Exhaust - min 4 bolts
fuel lines - 2
Engine harness grounds - 2 on back of intake

Of course you have to completely disconnect the engine wiring harness and remove the accessorys and brackets, fan and shrowd, and possibly the rad too. The upper intake also has to come off to get access to many of these parts.

It's too bad it's not a '94 or newer 351W, as those have the roller cams in them, and they're very nice.

I hear you on that, American Thunder.

I am actually just getting into the Bronco stuff so I figure this will get me up and running to use as a daily driver.

As I check more stuff out I can see what other mods I would like to do to it.
