I found an engine for my 90 F150 ext. cab 5spd. M5r2. The engine has 130K miles and is a 351 out of a 90 F250 vs my stock 302 with 145K miles. Would this new engine be better? I plan on using this truck as a daily driver and an occational mudd runner. I planned on puting in a 4" lift and 33" tires w/ 4.10 or 4.56 gears. I'm wondering for the lift and gears which engine would be better, should i rebuild the old tranny or get a different newer one, I still want to get +15mpg on the highway, Is this possible with a little tunning? Either engine is going to get a rebuild as soon as i get the cash along w/ some exhaught sytem re working and some preformance parts. Help? What can should I do?
i would use the 351 and pull the heads off and drop the bottom end out and hone it or go .030 over if you hone it you can keep your pistons just get new rings if you go .030 over get some pistons, if you are planning on making some power get forged pistons, your rods should be good to like 500hp or so and get the block line bored, get the crank cut, rods redone and new bottom end bearings, you don't have to replace cam bearings if you don't want to.
go with 4.56 gears for 33in tires definatly! i just ordered a set of 4.56 gears like an hour ago for my truck i got tired of my 3.73s
and to fit 33s you just need a leveling kit not a 4in lift with a 4in lift you can get 36in tires and i would go with some gears in the low 5.XX range
The 5.8 is a WAY better truck engine, It's so torquey compared to the 5.0 it's hard to believe there's only 50 cubic inches difference. The M5 will survive behind the 5.8 for a little while but it will fail sooner or later so find a ZF to replace it. Put a cam and longtubes on the 5.8, 4.10 gears and 33" tires and you will be in love, with the Crane 444232 in my 5.8 the truck got 13mpg mixed and 17+ highway.

I couldn't find that crane cam. Where's the easziest place to find it. The Zf tranny would be awsome with 4.56 gears, but i'd still pull 2300 rpm in overdrive at 65mph. could i get a lower(numericaly) top gear or will i still get good milage driving 60mph to the lakes on weekends.
I have a stock 351 with the 5 speed and 4.10. I can hit 80 on the highway. The truck is much more comfortable at 70-75. I understand going lower for off-road use but I would not go any lower if you plan to use highways often. I have Overdrive but would love the 6th gear. First gear is insane and not used much, but this truck will have no problem pushing a plow.
Did 351 come with hyd. flat tappets in 1990? Are flat tappets any better that rollers. I was thinking of doing roller lifters and rockers, but would that help me at all?
