I have a 96 f 150 4x4 with a 5.0 and 33s that I would like to get more power and torque out of. I also would like to help the gas mileage (it gets 10-12). all the cams and headers that i have seen go thru 1995 and start again at 1997. are there any differances between the 95s and 96s? what else could i do? im trying to keep a reasonable budget but am open to all ideas
in 96 they had obd II which sucks for performance mods since you have to pass emissions but basically a 5.0 is a 5.0, you have a roller motor in your truck and mass air so you can get a pretty lumpy cam in there if you want to (i think anyway wait for Conanski to answer he will know for sure) but i would definatly do gears instead of making more power, it's cheaper and easier on the tranny. i have 33s and just ordered a set of 4.56 gears today and that takes me back to the factory ratio with 3.73s and stock tires i'm SOOO excited to be able to use overdrive when i'm going under like 80mph now!! and for my speedo to work right again (i was too lazy to replace the gear)
it's a dana 44 ttb, to go to 4.10 gears you need to buy a new carrier for the front that is a 3.92 up carrier or get a thick cut gear but good luck finding anyone who makes them so basically look for a 4.10 reverse cut gear for a dana 44 and a carrier for 3.92 and up ratios
for the rear just use any 4.10 gears for an 8.8in as long as they arn't reverse cut
i would like to get it up to about 300 horsepower eventually but now it is stock. im using it for a daily driver so i have to consider mileage and durability over brute power, but more is better
You need the ABS/speeds sensor in the 8.8 for proper engine and tranny operation so the 9" is a no go. And if you haven't done so already recalibrate your speedo, it's off with the big tires and that makes your milage look worse than it is.
