anyone running something besides mercon 5 in their tranny? I'm up for changing my fluid and filter. i've put royal purple in my mustang (its a 93)and like it, but i know that some of these newer transmissions are finicky. i've got an 06 fx4. thanks.
Unless it meets the Mercon 5 spec, your going to risk voiding your warrenty, and possible issues with your trans. I've found that even with the fluid a little low in these transmissions, they start shifting funny. I can always tell when the trans was low on fluid, with the shifts.
I just swapped out my valve body last weekend for Troyer's unit and filled it up with Mobil 1 ATF along with a larger aluminum pan. I used Mobil 1 in my prior Ford's going back a lot of years and never had any problems with it. It's not a cheap alternative, but it's good stuff. The pan gasket in my '08 was a reusable rubber/steel gasket.
The pan gasket is a reuseable rubber/ steel one. As for the Mercon V fluid the Motorcraft or Valvoline are full synthetic and cost about $4.50/ Quart. I used Valvoline on my last 2 changes. I found out that the Motorcraft is about the same cost. I used Royal Purple in my P/S unit. Wish I had read the Mercon V Automatic Transmission and Power Steering Fluid web sight. Thanks, PJF150.
I use nothing but AMSOIL 100% synthetic in all my vehicles. Their ATF is better than anything else out there, runs cooler, less friction and wear, and its good for 100,000 miles. They also have a guarantee that if something goes wrong while using their product, and the dealer says AMSOIL fluids voided their warantee; AMSOIL will go to bat for you, and if they dont win, they will pay for repairs.
I also run their engine oil which is good for 1yr or 25,000 miles. Its alot more expensive, but with the intraval changes its cheaper. I am not a dealer, I have just seen too many instances where the the stuff has impressed me.
