Anyone done this? I have a new set (4) of General AT2 Grabbers 265/70/16, and have a friend that has a set of black steele Rock Crawler wheels still in the box's for sale for $150 bucks. They are 16x10 he ordered from 4WheelOffroad. I know the wheels will fit, he ordered them for his 2000 XLT 2wd. I have seen 255/40/17's tires on a 17x10 wheel before, they looked safe and they wre raced on without incident. Any suggetions? I intend on mouting them this week end unless you guys feel its unsafe, but its a great deal, if its safe.
If you can, mount one up and see how it looks. The concerns with too wide a rim are:
--sidewall vulnerability, as the sidewall is now wider than the tread by a good measure. (wider than it usually is)
--ride quality, as the sidewall is now bowed out and 'straighter' than it would be on a narrower rim
--wheel vulnerability, as the wheel rim is now more exposed
--loss of tire or the tire pulling away from the bead seats in the event of a flat or even low pressure
265 mm is just under 10 1/2 inches, but, tire sizes are 'nominal', so these could be wider--for the price of the wheels, it would be worth looking at them installed if you can before you buy....
Wow, great info. I have seen, actually this morning, neighbor of mine has a 240sx with 17x10 rims in the back with 255-40-17 tires stretched onto them, looks insane, but he has had no issues with them. I know the 240 weighs about 1/10th of my Expedition but he Drifts it regularly at events and "other places". I dont think tire wheel/tire combo im tlaking aobut would look like that, but i do agree some 275 or 285 70's would be the correct/safe tires to buy. But i already have the 265's stacked up on my carport. I have seen 265's on 10" rims, but the were 60 series and street tires, not all terrain's like the Grabbers. That look pretty good on a 81 Ford hotrod pickup (347CU-Nitrous injected), crazy truck, but gorgeous. Anyway, thanks for the help. I will mount one and see how it looks, and post pics. It will be this week end - early next week.
i have put 31X10.50r15 on 15X10 rims. It will really exspose more sidewall. makes the tires look real wide but can cause abnormal wear. and you need to keep the air pressure up so they don't come off.
