91 F150 4x4
Getting a loud scraping sound when the 4x4 hubs are locked.
Both going forward and reverse. Sounds like left front.
Doesn't do it when they are turned to free and 2 wheel drive.
The automatic hubs had been replaced with Warner manuals before I bought it.
Don't know when, I bought it in 2004.
With hubs locked and in 4 wheel high, the 4 wheel drive works.
Did a quick search and sounds like maybe a bad lockout but wanted to ask
for advice anyway.
you have a u joint on the outboard end of the axle shaft - likely bad, and you have a stub shaft support bearing inside the spindle - definitely bad. (even if its not making the noise, I guarantee you its bad)
ITs not rocket science to take apart and fix, but it is challenging due to rust. Plus places like advance which DO have the parts, will look at you with a stupid look on their face until you smack em hard enuf.
I posted somewhere the procedure to fix these gizmos...search on my posts with proper key words to find it.
oh I forgot - something you can do - put it in 4x4, but DONT turn in the hubs. this will make it point to axle-ly things like u joints and stub shaft bearings.
Had same sound on my '92 F-150 300, same side, and have automatic hubs. Only did it when 4X4 was locked on. I tore apart the hub. Not of all it, jacked the front up, then pulled the tire off. I let the axle lean a bit down, then sprayed some PB blaster in, soaked it. Then I let it sit back up, let it soak for many hours, then sprayed it some more, bunch of trash came out, like rust and fine metal liquid, like graphite. Then took some compressed air, lightly blew it out well, made sure I cleaned it really good, then put some axle grease in as far as my screwdriver would go. Packd it good with it, while spinning it, then I removed a bunch of the excess, put it back together and drove it with 4-wheel drive. Not a sound of that scraping since, but I'm betting I'll need to replace some things whenever I change pads and rotors next spring and summer. To cold and too poor this winter!

I don't know why, I always kinda figure a guy's looked for problems. Stuff like bad u-joints. Maybe even jacked it up spun the wheels with the hubs locked some while looking and listening and even checked stuff for play.
Anything that might make the noise they hear and couldn't see anything obviously wrong with it.
That in turn brings em here to us........guess I should rethink that huh?

I tried that and it makes the scraping noise too.
Don't have a garage and it's too cold to work on it in the drive.
I'll see if I can dig out a path in my Dad's garage to pull it in this weekend
and lift the front end up and take a look.
Trying not to drive it too much, but is it doing more damage even in 2 wheel drive?
It sure doesn't sound too good when in 4 wheel, but only engage it to get up a snowy driveway.

x2
I posted the O'reilly part numbers necessary for the replacement of the axleshaft support bearing inside the spindle in a thread just a week or two ago. It should be pretty easy to find using the search.
Well u might wanna check to make sure the caps on the inner front ujoint are clipped in, mine was makin that noise and one of the caps just bout came out. they were rubbin on the grease fitting for ball joint

that's what i used to think too untill i came to this forum not bashing the poster but a lot of people come here with out even doing basic checks for what is wrong with their truck.......i have been thinking about only hanging out at the pirate 4x4 forum because of this
now for the poster, i got some grease from my wheelbearings in my hubs (got a little overzealous when packing the bearings) and the drivers side wouldn't engauge all of the way and rubbed on the axle. and then it started to try and engauge when going around a left turn, just pull them off and give them a good cleaning and spray them with silocone spray to lube them, DON"T spray blaster anywhere around your bearings it'll eat the grease right out of them
