Wednesday was to be a day of painting but my wife and her car saw differently. She barely gets home Monday night with her CEL on for a cylinder 1 misfire again only this time it was worse. Women! Do they ever look at gauges to see what is going on? The plastic reservoir container developed a crack and was slowly leaking water. Enough so you would see a little puddle at the end of the day but was never noticed. So can we all guess what happened on the freeway? Car started running really bad. When finally home the car took 6 qts. of water in a 12 quart system. Not good. Since I had a new injector for cylinder 1 I took off the UIM. What I see is a bit of white film inside the #1 runner. Damn! Put the injector and and button her up to start. Wow, one hell of an exhaust leak. Turns out the damn EGR pipe cracked at the bottom fitting while the CEL is flashing at me. Pull the plug and it is wet... with water! Head gasket gone and I am not tackling that job on the rear bank of a Sable. Wonder what this would cost to do. Good thing my wife isn't a pilot as she wouldn't live through her first flight with all those gauges...
Also put the engine back together in the truck. First thing is a oil leak. Only hand tightened the oil pan plug. Pour in the coolant and end up with two leaks. Upper hose at thermostat housing and the water bypass. Both due to clamps. Switch one the the late 60's type Ford clamp which is the wire clamp. They never leak. Switch the water bypass clamp from the older tower style to a worm type and the leaks are solved. I thought. Start to turn the car over and smell gas. Sure enough it is coming out the fuel line fitting at the fuel pump. Tightening makes no difference here so now I need a new fuel line. A long and frustrating day.
Then my wife comes home. Naturally a filipina says don't concern yourself with it. LOL, that is why their country is so backwards as everybody thinks why worry why rush. She doesn't understand why I won't quietly accept failures so to speak. ON top of this I am leaving on vacation is 5 days and need her car running. So off to the junk yard to hunt among the hundreds of Taurus/Sables for the EGR pipe. My truck will have to wait sans it's fenders, hood, and bumpers. Man, do I need a break...

CA vehicles use a different EGR tube than the other 49 states.
Is it a CA vehicle? If the DSO Code (on the Certification Label) of the Taurus is 71 (LA) or 72 (San Jose), it is.
If the DSO Code of the Sable is 75 (LA-Phoenix) or 77 (Oakland), it is. Any other DSO Code, it's not a CA vehicle.
Hey TBM .. go on vacation and relax. Life is too short to worry about vehicle problems. You'll get it fixed and never think about it again (I break my cars and truck on a regular bassis) My wife just shakes her head. I used to get all stressed out about it. Now I consider it a hobby.
Man, Thats unreal tbm3fan...I hope the car isnt overcooked from the head gasket issue...
As for the sloooooooooooooooooooooow server here..I have had similar experiences in the last day or two....its becoming more frequent...I wish I could wave a magic wand and make it all function at top speed
To Number Dummy I did find a replacement at Pick & Pull in Fairfield. Had 4 of my type of which I broke the first two before getting one out complete. It is now in the car, but...
To Camperspecial65 it does now look like she cooked the head gasket as there was no improvement in the misfire condition. Water out tail pipe and water on spark plug. Question for me is do I handle it on Sunday assuming there will be no head issues and no open machine shop or wait...
that whole story reminds me of our ford explorer or mazda najho thingy...
basically we repaired the intake gasket.... drove for a while... and had to do the head gasket later that day... got it fixed by the next day... went out to a shucks store to pick up an air compresor they had on sale... on the way back... clutch goes out.... get it home... and find out the clutch plate or pressure plate was shreaded... ordered a new clutch kit.... got it running and took it for a trip around the block and to get grocereys and smoke starts coming out from under the hood... one of the starter wires wasnt tight... fixed it and drove home...
then a few months later.... exeahust... we redneck fix it with a coffee can over the whole in the existing muffler... and ordered a new one... got that in there.... drive shaft falls off a month later....{luckly right in front of the house....} get that fixed{those bolts are hard as hell to find} a month later....fuel pump starts going out along with mass air flow sensor.... get both of those fixed.... and tranny goes out compeltly... so its retired...... RIP big blue... your new home will either be the scrap yard or my trail rig build... she brought alot of father and son bonding.... maybe some day she will again...
but thats a good idea... if you gotta kid... try and get them to spend time with you while your trying to fix the dang thing...
good luck... and remember dont get to mad at it... cause that could just cause more problems with the stupid thing you know?
Turns out the Sable has a burned exhaust valve at cylinder #1. Decided to do a compression check before anything else since this misfire has been more and more a problem over time. Compression was zero, nada, zilch no matter what. All other cylinders at 150 psi. So it will have to wait since this means I need a machine shop to work on the head for a day or so. By then I'll be in the Philippines...

Nope, was my father's car from April 20, 1968 till Dec. 18, 1969 when I turned 16 and bought it. If our first kid is a boy then he will get it after I'm gone unless he is completely mechanically inept...
