'41 stakebed w/300, ? conversion back to carb, points
Greetings, new to forum,
? anyone do a reverse fuel conversion, electronic fuel injection back to carb, points?
i am building a rat; '41 commercial cab, stakebed on a '92 van chassis w/300 inline, i want to go backwards as i want to get rid of the computers, wiring and simplify. any help appreciated, i can check email twice a day, early a.m., late p.m.
Not sure I'd go ALL the way back. You might just go to a carburator normally aspirated and stay with electronic ignition. Thus eliminating the points and condenser.
It is a relatively simple process.
You need to eliminate the high pressure EFI fuel pump and use a low pressure pump such as a Holley or Carter. Or you may open a hole in the side of the block to use a mechanical pump - the lobe is still on the cam and the boss holes are there. You will need less spark timing because of the 'fast burn' characteristics of the EFI head. Depending on what exhaust manifolds you use some mods may be required to the intake. Good luck.
I'll add that the '92 van 300 will be running at 12v for the ignition, which you won't want for anything older than a TFI coil set-up. When I put my 300 into my '79 Bronco, I used a newer 300, removed the top end, added a Duraspark II ignition (Bronco already had DSII, so the ignition was already resisted), pre egr carb spacer, intake, and carter y carb, and kept the efi exhaust with a Walker downpipe. I also used the TFI coil with a pigtail assembly spliced into the DSII wires. Oh, and a manual choke. My engine doesn't have any rats nest on top anymore...great for troubleshooting in -30F weather.

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:
I just dislike the look of the computerized style. I do like that sponsers product since it is all in a single piece unlike the stock Ford electronic ignition. I just don't care for the wirey look that a modern stock ignition has. And I have driven with points throughout all season up in Canada without problem.
The only wire you need for a point system is a hot wire running to your ignition switch from the coil, then wire the coil to the distrubutor and make sure the coil is grounded. All you need to set points is a feeler guage, some emery cloth, and a screw driver set it every oil change and good to rockNroll.
