An 05 Ex with 49k, Id buy the thing if the Oasis report is clear of anything too bad! Worst case you should have a pretty good rig! Some things that are issues on 6.0 motors are the EGR valves, they definitely have to be the one thing that malfunction more than anything else! The turbos can have issues and if you use an aftermarket tuner/programmer you can blow the head gaskets! Other than that they are sweet trucks! I would also buy the Ford ESP warranty for it so you don't get nailed with a huge bill for a turbo or injectors etc.... I have a 2004 6.0 Eddie Bauer 4x4 and I have had lots of different issues but I am still driving it! I have 56k miles and it's running strong! Once you go diesel you won't ever want to go back to a gasser!!!
I have an 05 and had the turbo replaced at 15k. I now have 16k on it. I also had an oil leak and they traced it to a cold air intake tube gasket. One front hub was replaced because it was hard to turn. It worked fine just hard to turn and since it was under warranty.
I think my engine problems were due to lack of use. It sits most of the time. They say the diesels aren't broken in till about 30k. That's another 3 years for me. I would recommend the ESP if you DON'T live in FL. They cost to much here.
You will really love the engine on this thing. My first diesel and glad I got it.
As long as you drive that truck regularly and take care of it, you won't have a problem. My X has close to 200K on it the only big thing I had to replace was my tranny; engine wise, my 7.3 is a strong reliable engine. If I had a 6.0, it would never break down or have the issues that some owners run into (stuck turbo vanes, injector problems, etc) simply because it's cared for and sees alof of highway runs.
I got it with 33k last year and I cleaned the EGR once because it was running crappy.. Press gas and no acceleration. Cleaned it and runs perfect since.
I think the guy who owned it before me only got groceries with it.
I will check the EGR every year or so...
What is the asking $. I bought mine before the fuel $ hike so I paid too much :-( But I dont plan on letting her go until kids are older. Got another 10-15 years left.
