CV Shaft Noise

My front drivers side CV Shaft is making a horrible squeaking noise while traveling down the road. At first I thought it was the brakes (to give you an idea of the type of sound), but after further investigation I found it was coming from the CV Shaft.

Does anyone know how to cure this problem? New shaft? New boots?

Thanks for any help!

Supposedly from what I hear the boots dry up and then you get your noises from that. I have have a noise on my 2001 that happens only when I get below 30 mph. Its a metal against rubber sound. It was definetly not coming from the boot, it was comeing from where the "boot axle splined end" goes into the wheel bearing knuckle. I took off the spindle nut and pushed the axle back inward a bit and saw the seal in there and I cleaned it up and put a light coating of oil on it and now the noise is gone. Does yours do it in reverse?

No, it doesn't do it in reverse. And I think the noise your describing, rubber on metal, is the noise I'm hearing.

Also, when it first started it happened below 30 but now I think it does it most of the time. Only after I have been driving for a bit though, doesn't happen right away.

What I did is jack up my drivers side and spun the wheel by hand and I could hear the "noise" so I took soem wd40 with the little hose on it and sprayed a little bit, right where the metal part of the stub axle goes into the knuckle, and the noise went away. It worked for a day, then I did the whole other thing described above and it worked. There is a rubber seal in there, not sure what the hell it does, because this is a sealed bearing, but I think the seal dries out from the heat after a few years and begins to "sing" after a while.
Good Luck

Thanks for the help, I'll try that. Do you know what size the spindle nut is?

36 mm. Some have reported a different size though.

I bought a 1 3/8" and it fits like a glove. 36mm and 1 3/8" are very close

After a little more investigation, I found that the noise is coming from where the axle connects to the differential. Seems like the seal on the differential may be bad I think, so it looks like I'm going to have to take it to Ford and see what the deal is.

Mine is still going strong with no noises. I would try an eliminate things. Try and spray it with some wd40 or something first and see if the noise goes away.
