I am looking at a 2006 F150 XLT with 10,020 miles. It has 4 wheel drive and is extended cab with the 5.4. The car fax report looks clean it was leased on 4/06 then whoever leased it gave it back on 10/2007. Then the dealer I am buying it from got it from a Ford auction.
I was wondering about the rear end, the sales guy said it was limited slip and that all the XLT's with a 5.4 4WD came with limited slip. How can I find the rear gear ratio? It isn't on a sticker in the glove compartment like my current Dodge. Does anyone have any advice or things to look for on a used car?
If you could look at the ID tag on the inside of the drivers door jam (or get the salesman too), and see what is says under 'axle code'
IF it is H9, it is 3.55 Limited slip
IF it is B6, it is 3.73 Limited slip
Or on the axle there is a axle tag mounted on the cover bolts. The first numbers would read something like this: 3L55 (which means 3.55 limited slip)

Not all XLTs have a limited slip. I have a one-wheel-peel wonder. Only FX4s have a limited slip standard. Your gears are either 3.55 or 3.73 if the wheels are 6 lug, or 4.10s if they're 7 lug - in that case you have the Heavy Duty package. the door sticker will yield more info as to which gears and what diff exactly you have...
The Heavy Duty package is only available through XLs, so it being a XLT eliminates that possiblility.
It is true though, not all XLTs have limited slips, but like I said, IF I had to guess, I'd say it is 3.55 Limited slip.
Get a Ford dealer to run an OASIS report on the truck. This can give you some insight that a CARFAX can't. It will tell you about warranty repair history.
That's incorrect on the XL only for the heavy duty package. Here's the details from the 2006 F150 Order Guide.

Well, it changed since 04 then.
In 04, the only truck you could get the Heavy duty package in was a regular cab long bed XL
Got out of the truck market after I bought a 04, so I didn't know they changed that.
I bought the truck....to good of a deal to pass up. It does have the limited slip (h9).

I got it for 17,200. 18,500 with tax, title, license. Still has a year left on the bumper to bumper warranty. Minus my trade in and down payment im only financing ten grand so I'm happy.
Seems a little sluggish ( i feel sorry for the people that have this truck with a 4.6). That's ok though becuase I also have an 06 mustang GT to make up for it.
Sounds like a great deal!
Now is the time to buy full size trucks (w/ gas prices sorring)....you get a good price, but it'll hurt to fill it up..
Got any pics of the truck?
The electronic throttle takes some getting use to.....don't know why, but when I take the OD off and get on the skinny pedal, it feels so much better/powerful.

Congrats on the new (to you) Truck! You'll love it
I would have the Dealer reset the Transmission shift points to Factory / Zero mile setting.... The transmission/computer in these trucks adapts to your driving style! My truck is not sluggish at all and it now has 31,000 miles on it! It will never accelarate like a '06 Mustang GT - then again - there is no need for it to
