Newbie here going to look at a 94 F250 2WD with 300 CID engine, 5 speed manual, and 80,000 miles. Besides rust and the possibililty it really has 180,000 miles, is there anything I should be on the lookout for?
It's been a while since I've had a Ford truck but like the idea of the straight 6 and the 5 speed in terms of durability and ease of maintenance. Please tell me if I'm way off base with that thought.
I'll be a work truck to bang around the farm and very occasionally pull a double axle flat bed trailer (5000 lbs. GVWR) short distances full of junk. It'll probably only see 2 to 3k miles per year. I don't mind going slow so I don't need a Super-duty with the 460. The truck is only 6,600 pounds GVWR but it would be replacing a 7,500 lb. 3/4 ton Dodge with a 318 that did the job nicely but finally rusted to pieces.
First off... Welcome to FTE .....There are a ton of people on this site with a bundle of info at your disposal dont be afraid to ask questions.
Now back to the truck. The 300 is a great motor that will last forever if you mantain it right.... 5 speed is also a great way to go, wont drive anything else. If it really does have only 80k on it you will be able to tell just by how the interior is and if the truck still drives tight and not alot of things are loose. If the price is right it looks like you might be bringing one good old truck home.
Thanks for the reply. They're looking to get $2,500 obo. Owner repaired some rust around the rear wheel wells but claims very little rust underneath. My last truck rotted from the frame up and the death blow was an upper control arm that broke in half, so I'm more concerned about frame/suspension rust than anything. I'd like to be able to work on stuff like ball joints, tie rods, etc. without having to use a cutting torch to disassemble things.
I'll probably be putting a small dump body on it so I don't really care about the condition of the bed.
That motor runs like a top and won't let you down.
Check THE UNDERSIDE for rust. They like to rot from the bottom up. Floorpans are usually first and rear spring shackles are pretty common replacement items.
Also, these trucks don't like to sit, so if it's been parked for a while, I'd plan to change the fuel filter and check all hoses and lines for cracks before you really drive anywhere.
Not sure where you're at but the price seems fair for the mileage. These years have digital odo's, so there's no rollover.
The 93 up have the electronic display on the odometer and should show if it reaches the 100,000 mark. The only way to defeat it is to replace the PSOM. It probably only has the 80,000. It must be the light duty F250 with that gross weight. It probably does not have the heavy duty full floating axle rearend under it, but will probably do all that you want if you are not in a hurry.
