I have a late 70's or maybe early 80's 302 in my 66 f-100. There is a clicking noise that is getting worse and worse. I used a small wooden pole to listen for it. It seems as though it is a valvetrain noise rather than a rod knock. And I'm pretty sure its the #1 cylinder. I am going to pull the valve cover to verify this. Once I determine which cylinder it is and that it is definatly a valvtrain noise, what should I replace? I am not going to do any unneccesary repair or preventative maintenance to any other cylinder while I'm in there. I just want to eliminate the noise. I don't want to tighten down the rocker arm and then the noise come back. What should I replace? lifters, pushrods, springs, and rocker arms???
You are awesome if you reply to this with helpful info!

Only taking it apart will tell. The 302's that I work on are positive stop, or whatever the 302/351 name for non-adjustable rockers is. With a valve closed, should be able to rotate the pushrod to check for a bent one. Try wiggling the pushrod up and down, should not have free play and clack up and down. If it does and its not bent, then maybe the lifter has collapsed. But look at the rocker and fulcrum too. If its a bad lifter, then replace the pushrod too. But you have to pull the intake manifold to get at lifters. And at only $2 a lifter, and a few bucks for a set of 4 pushrods, may want to replace all of them if you have to do 1. You will spend more labor time getting at them than the part cost, make it worthwhile. Rotate the crank to watch the valve go up and down, watch the springs too, just to check it all out.
