I am in the final stages of putting a rebuilt 302 into my ’85 E150 van. The intake manifold is cast (not aluminum) and is a 2 barrel. There is a “regular” thickness gasket that sits between the manifold and a spacer (the spacer is connected to the EGR).
A second gasket sits between the spacer and the carburetor. The old one that came off here was about a half-inch thick and made of some kind of plastic/bakelight stuff. According to the books at the auto parts shop, this second gasket should be “regular” thickness if the manifold is cast but if the manifold is aluminum it should be the half inch thick one. Being that the manifold is cast, I figured a previous owner put the wrong one on and I bought the “regular” thickness gasket. In practice it turns out that only the thick one will allow the carb to fit because of a part on the carb that hits the spacer if the regular gasket is used.
Are these parts books sometimes wrong? I’m thinking they got it backwards.
Yes part books and shop manuals are sometimes wrong I had a chilton book for a VW say the plastigauge for the crank bearings should be .38 clearance I seriously believe there is a couple of 0's missing there
