Ive got a 4.9L I6. it has the stock carter carb on it and it sucks, ive rebuilt it once and the previous owner rebuilt it as well. im looking to replace it with a 2bbl. but the only ones i can find say they fit a 5L engine. can i put a 5L carb on my 4.9L, do i need a kit of some sort to do it?
i tried searching around but couldnt find anything conclusive
Yes you can put a stock Motorcraft 2100\2150 on it. You will probably have to use a 4-barrel intake with a 2-barrel adapter; unless you can find an adpater to mount a 2-barrel on a 1-barrel intake. I've heard of such adapters but haven't seen one before.
It depends if you can find 1 bbl to 2 bbl adapters. If you can, then you won't have to get a new intake. Like I said, I've heard people mention them before, but I haven't personally seen one. The carb base of a 2 barrel would completely cover the bolts for the 1 barrel flange, so I think they'd be pretty tricky to make, if they do exist. I imagine the air flow would be bogged down as well. Maybe someone else can chime in if they know of such a thing. If you can't find such an adapter, you'll have to get a 4 barrel intake. 4 barrel to 2 barrel adapters are very easy to get ahold of.
I had one years ago that I obtained from J. C. Whitney...but I never used it.
What fmc400 said. Keep an eye out on eBay for an Offy C or Clifford Intake manifold either one of which can be used with 2v carb adapters. But, JMO, there isn't anything a 2v carb can do that a small 4v can't do better especially with an Offy DP intake.
