98 ranger 3.0 no 4x4..... 4X4 lightS blinking 4 times
Just bought this 98 Ranger 3 days ago. The guy told me everything worked! What he failed to tell me was everything worked but the 4x4. When I switch to 4 high or 4 low all I get is both hi and low 4x4 lights flashing 4 times every 2 minutes. The 4 wheel drive is not engaging at ll. Where to i look first? Thanks.
the same thing happened to my truck. generally its the PVH, pulse vaccum hubs that are the problem. its typical on the 98 from what i hear. first you have to look under neath and determine if the transfer case is engageing. hopefully the problem is that the hubs aren't locking in. after market manual hubs are something worth considering. about $100. there are more than a few threads on this subject. as for myself I found a thread called "adding manual control to your 1998-2000 ford ranger" its involves takeing a pair of dykes and cutting out the plastic wagon wheel shape and the metal screen essentially giving you a finger sized hole in your hub so you can lock/unlock your hubs without damageing the vac lines and without spending the hundred or so bucks. that's just me though... I'm cheap. I was sceptical at first but now after about 2 weeks after the modification I'm am more than satisfied with the results. the directions are easy to follow and takes only five minutes a hub.....provided that is your problem. so make sure the differential/transfer case is operating normally. Like I said though I drive a 98 3.0 4x4 and the 4wheel lights out of nowhere started flashing 4-5 times and no 4wheel drive ..the prob was the hubs.

Reason: mis spelled word
You can get the manual hubs from tellico 4x4, there AVM and are the only ones available for the PVH system. There about 100 bucks and it will be fixed once and for all and maaanual hubs can save you a little gas as well.
I got under the truck today. The shift motor is not working. I put my hand on it and had my son flip the 4X4 switch. Nothing! Maybe a bad shift motor or fuse or something!
Does anybody know what fuse to look at under the hood? What would be the name of it? None of the fuses are marked. I have a chiltons manuel but I am unsure about what fuse to check.
Well, thats the other thing that fails, the shift motor, mostly from non use in my experience. I don't know what fuse it is, but there bad for gumming up and not working. 95% of the time it's the PVH, 5% of the time it's the shift motor. Hpefully it's a power issue, but most folks aren't that lucky.
Every site I go to to buy a new transfer case motor, they do not have one for my 98 ranger. Why is that? They have them from 97 on down and from 99 on up but nothing for a 98. Can I use a differant year motor?
