All, I have a 1995 2wd 4.9L F150with the Mazda manual tranny. It's been serviced once a couple years ago when I couldn't get it out first gear. Been smooth as silk since, until about 2-3 months ago. Now, mainly when shifting from 1st to 2nd, I have to pull it a bit hard and it "clunks" out of first going into 2nd. The same problem shows up to a lesser degree in other gears. I can lessen the feeling by really gently and slowly pulling the gear out of 1st and "gliding" it into 2nd. Seems worse right after car starts. Also, I've noticed sometimes that when I put the gear back in 1st while slowing to a stop the gear won't go in and I'll feel a spinning grinding noise like something is not letting the gear back in until a complete stop. I know nothing about trannys. Both symptoms appeared at the same time. Ideas?
Sounds to me like your clutch isn't disenguaging completely.
Are you holding the clutch to the floor when you shift?
Is it worse if you just cross the fiction point then shift?

I think that it is easier if I consciously think about pushing the clush as far down as it will go as a part of my efforts to glide the shift stick from one gear to the next, so it may be smoother. However, I basically push the clutch all the way down, so it can't be more than a fraction of an inch further when I think about it.
That's a classic symptom of a loss of hydraulic pressure to the slave cylinder. It won't fully release the clutch, therefore it shifts hard and grinds. Check the master cylinder for signs of leaking as well as the slave cylinder. If there is brake fluid leaking from the bellhousing, the slave it bad.
No idea where slave/master cylinder is or how to get to the top of the transmission to check the level. Is it a PITA or should I just take it to a transmission shop and ask them to check these things?
