I am looking to buy a new or used exhaust manifold for my ford flathead six 226 cu in motor. One of the ears where the exhaust manifold screws into the maniflold has broken off. I have taken it to several welding shops that have told me that it can not be welded. Any ideas on how to repair or where I could find another one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jay
As a member of the Hobart Welders WeldTalk forum, I'd think that it can be welded. Most cast steel and cast iron can be welded, but the process is more difficult. In the case of an item like this where there may not be many around, I think it'd be worth it. You might check there, as somebody may be willing to weld it for you if you can get it to them. Personally, I have only watched cast iron being welded. Never done it myself, but I know it can be done.
My old man had a cracked manifold on a Massey Harris 55 tractor, he welded it with a Lincolin mig. Several years later still works great. Any welder that knows what he is doling should be able to pull his off, even though not as pretty as factory.

I just sold a 226 exhaust mani and head for $25 (plus ship) to another fellow here. I asked on the flathead forum about what parts I could use on an flat V8.
I ran an ad for about a month or so and got very little interest. At the end of my thread, since another fellow asked about my (sold) exhaust, 51ford fan said he had an exhaust mani available.
yes it can be welded.we preheat it before we start. I it can be stick welded with a special rod or tig and we use to braze them years ago. the next stepif it's at a bolt hole will to be geting a good surface for the bolt head to seat on and this can be done by placing it in a mill.
