I'll be travelling to southern califonia in February, and taking in the sights of Disney, san diego zoo etc. My wife and I are both nature nuts, and we'd like to take in some of the natural scenery while we are there. What parks would you reccomend for day hikes and scenic drives? I'll be renting a car, so anything in about a three hour drive from Anaheim would be OK. Google earth shows me some state parks, but it's hard to know.
Anza Borrego State Park is about an hour east of San Diego. Largest state park in the lower 48. Being from Canada you might like desert scenery in winter.
I think you would enjoy going to Palm Springs to ride the Tramway from the desert floor up to the top of Mt. San Gorgonio (about 11,000'). Right up the side of the mountain. You can see forever ( weather permitting ) from the top and there are numerous hiking trails.
Or just drive up PCH north of Malibu. Skip Oxnard. Check out Ventura, Santa Barbara and points north. Lots of nice beaches and mountains.
' Skip Oxnard ' I grew up in Camarillo and have been telling people that for years!!
If you're going as far as Santa Barbara, the botanical gardens there are one of my favorites. It's also a nice drive over 154 towards Santa Ynez, but that may be a little far.
