I have a 42 panel truck and I am done with fighting the steering on this thing. It is not stock anyway - 350 w/ TH400 tranny. I cannot find any IFS kit w/ power steering that specifically applies to the 42. I am pretty sure it is the same as the pick-up. Anyone out there have any experience?
Not certain, but the FIRST place I would check would be Fatman Fabrications out of the Charlotte North Carolina area. Here's a Phone contact number 704/545-0369
They've changed their website, they used to have their catalog 'sorts' online. But call them, I'm sure they can help.
Most of the IFS manufactures will make a crossmember for enything, they would just need measurements.
Also, there's an archived post on the HAMB (jalopyjournal.com) that tells you how to make a crossmemember just like a Heidts crossmember.
Last but not least, I know the Radiator supports for the '48-52's are the same as the '42-47's....and I happen to have a '48 F1 frame in front of the shop I could get some measurements for you off of and you cold compare to your '47...I'd crawl under my '42, but just too many Black Widows in at at this time for me.
Assuming your panel frame is similar to the 1/2 ton frame in the front, there is an outfit called Progressive Automotive that sells what they call "Sweet Ryde" Vette Front Suspension that will fit a 42-47 1/2 ton. The cost doesn't seem to bad and they are located in Ohio, not too far away. Look them up under progressiveautomotive.com
I installed a Chassis Engineering bolt on IFS on my 46. It was designed for a 48 but with adjustment it seems to fit. I think the 48 frame is the same width up front.
I have a Progressive Front End under my '34 Chevy Sedan. As far as I'm concerned, thats an excellent choice. I run a lot of Chassis Engineering stuff on both my '34 and my '41 and believe in their stuff too. I suggested Fatman's because they do a LOT of trucks stuff for IFS. Of course there's Heidt's and many many more.
yes, my chassis engineering ifs came with Heidts control arms. Seemed like first class stuff. My rear suspension was also CE stuff, Bolted right on no problem, bolted to where the old rivits were located. Some of the after market MII stuff is a little on the expensive side but most is good quality. I was able to look at a lot of it at the NSRA in Louisville. The large shows are a good place to check out all the mfg's. Almost all have catalogs that can be obtained through the net.
I have a 47 which should be the same as the 42 I bought a mustang II kit from TCI in ontario I think the kit was for a 48 to 52 the crossmember fit good with minimal grinding You need to box the front frame sections ,Plates come with the kit . I upgraded to the tubular A arms and the air ride kit ,Comes with disc brakes .The one I got is manual but they do offer a power streering rack . I had to make some modifications to the mounts to the rack to change the angle the streering shaft pointed because I have a big block and had a tough time getting the streering around the motor also my motor is set back 10 inches so no issues with pan clearance with the front sump the motor is completely behind the crossmember .The main problem I had was once the thing was assembled the lower a-arms turned out to be to long ,I called TCI and they made me a new set 1 inch shorter and swapped out my old ones no problem, also do not get the drop spindles it sits low enough with the standard ones.
41inWV has passed along some good info about Fatman fabrications.
I will tell you first hand from my personal experience, service after the sale at Fatmans is outstanding, I am using one of their hub to hub kits in my 79 and have been very satisfied.
Just posted more picts of installing the Fatman IFS in a 47 jbar. Apologize in advance for leaving the picts "big", but some may want to pull them and blow them up a bit. http://www.computerliterates.com/47Ford
whats the width difference between a 48-50 frame and a 47? if its the same the jag installs so easy. there have been several on the 48-60 forum that have done it. I have it under mine now its easier than a graft and may be eaiser than a MII.
