alrighty,
i have a 1994 mercury cougar with a 4.6 V8. it started over heating. I'm thinking that its the water pump but there was no explosion of coolant, no leakage. However, the coolant reservoir was filled/over filled...mind you the coolant was at the proper level last time i checked.
so any ideas?
I'd replace the radiator cap and check the following:
oil for antifreeze (smell?)
antifreeze for oil (milky?)
pop radiator cap shortly after running -- if 'pop' sseems excessive may indcate head gasket ( overpressure of cooling system)
Make sure the radiator is not stopped up or a radiator hose is collapsing. When the car is hot, check to see if the center of the radiator is as hot as the engine. I've ran into a stopped up radiator several times (particularly MOPARS)
