I'm trying to find out if I do.. I asked in the old-ford forum but thought I might have more luck here.
All plates/codes are gone, some stuff is stamped into the front axle but I don't know what it means. It's a 78' F150 4x4 and it's possible it's not original..
The hub is 3 1/2'' (maybe more) across, someone told me a Dana60 would be close to 4''.
There are two stamps on the front of the cover, the upper says 353 and the lower says 077, both are upsidedown. On the back of the pumpkin is a large, stamped "072".
For someone that has only seen a single Dana front axle up close, what can I check to see if it's a 44 or a 60? "this is larger on a Dana60" wont work, because I don't have anything to compare to.
The bolts that hold the inspection cover on the D60 require a 9/16" wrench to remove and the D44 only requires a 1/2".
Easiest way to tell.
Chances are that if you still have 5 lugs and since it is in a 1/2 ton truck it is most likely a D44.
Alright, I found the BOM with lots and lots and lots of scrubbing. It's a lot smaller than I was expecting..
610059 - 5 .. I looked on that site and couldn't find it, it also didn't show up on Dana's site. but a google search brought up some threads on this forum.. It's a D44 though.. not that big of a deal, but it would have been nice if someone had swapped in a dana60.
I think the 5 means it's a 3.5 ratio, though I'm not sure. There is also another number on the long tube shaft that says 2 . 14 8B4 (I think? was hard to read). probably some date code..
I agree it's probably a D44 since it's in a 1/2 ton, the axle ratio can only be determined by opening it up. Stamping the axle ratio into the housing wouldn't mean much it someone change the R&P.
