Cool destroyed front & rear axles. please help!!!

Ok, this is what happened. Was driving down the road, when I hear a big bang from the rear end & then the truck stops moving & wont go. I put the truck in 1st gear & set the brake. look under truck & drive shaft is spinning but rear wheels aint movin. I sit for an hour & then decide to lock the hubs in & put it in 4 hi long enough to get home. I almost make it home when I get a big loud bang from the front. The truck no longer go's again. I look under the truck & find the passenger side stub shaft & outer axle shaft broke in two pieces. I eventually got it home with some help. My question is, how hard is to replace the front axle shaft & how hard is it to replace the whole rear axle? any feed back would be appreciated.

Rear axle replacement is very easy as long as you don't have firmly rusted bolts and the axle comes with everything (read: brakes and brake lines) The axle itself is heavy, so a helper may be useful.

Without opening the diff no one can know why.

Guess is lots of miles and wear on the diff. The front stub probably also died from old age or maybe lack of lubrication.

Haven't had this type of problem myslef, but assuming the stub shaft has normal universals, all you got to do in bolt them. A very easy job.

Arear axle is like the other guy said, easy but heavy.

You might pull the cover firts, Might be something simple to fix.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Hey there Vaughn, Post a little more info on your truck. What year & model. Jim has the right idea. If your truck is new enough to have a rear inspection cover it is a quick 10 minute job to drain oil & pop the cover for a quick look see. If you have a solid front axle a blown knuckle U-joint usually takes the inner & outer shafts with it. If you have Twin Traction Beam, the slip yoke on the pass side @ the diff wears out & eventually the spline strip away. Rick

thanks for the replys. the truck is a 1990 f150 with the 8.8 rear and ttb 44 front. i just transplanted a 351 about a month ago. put a new clutch/flywheel in while i was at it. every time i went to take off in first gear, the truck would shudder/grab real bad. it was ok in all other gears. after the rear blew & i put it in 4 hi to make it home, i noticed it took off real nice & easy in first gear. dont know if there was just that much slop in the rear from it being worn out or what!

Well the 8.8 has a cover on it. So grab a catch pail & a socket set & drop that rear cover for a look see. Did you look @ the front end? Is the U-joint blown in the steer knuckle or did the slip yoke splines give up? Keep us updated. Rick
