91 F350 460EFI Build -Help-
Hey Guys I've built several engines in the past but all of them have been old carb motors.
I want to rebuild my 1991 Ford F350 truck and give it some go power right now its pretty lame. I have read the threads on the exhaust and I am planning on making changes there.
I would like to pull the motor, bore it, new pistons, cam, heads rebuild or new heads, intake etc essentially whatever it takes.
What I'm trying to accomplish is a daily driver that I can use to pull my trailer over the mountain passes etc. Right now I'm rolling down the window and paddling with an oar to help her over the hills.
What I don't know is what can I get away with regards to the EFI? I would like to keep the EFI.
The truck is a 1991 Ford F350 with a 460EFI and an E40D tranny.
Also the truck currently has 3.55 gears in it, any place I can get some that will help put torque to the ground?
Thanks!

if you feel you need lower gears, try www.ringpinion.com
the fuelie motors dont like modifications... the computer has a tendency to freak on you. if you want more than 300 horse then switch to a carb top end.

460 efi mods
I have a 1992 F350 and I don't know why everone is so worried about the computer. The computer on these trucks is speed density the only two parameters the computer knows is to rich or to lean if you stay between these two the computer is fine. I have a mild cam in mine, bigger intake valves, a mild port on the heads, headers and full 3" exhaust and a K @ N fuel injection intake kit. I have never had any problems with the computer and my brother has a 1994 F350 that is stock and the power difference is huge. As a side note I am pretty sure you will have to put early heads and intake on it to run a carb. Mine also gets 14 mpg on the highway and pulls my 11,000 pound gooseneck horse trailer no problem

I don't think I want to put a carb on, I found a kit that can upgrade the speed density system to a mass flow system and change it over to multi-port sequential injection. Its made by PMAS kind of expensive but if I run into troubles that should get me out. The system retains all the stock components except the injector harness and computer.
Did you run later model heads or did you have your heads machined for larger valves? What size intake valves are you running?
What cam are you running?
Also are you running a manual transmission or the E40D automatic?
Thanks for the help!

I am running the 1992 heads with 2.08 intake valves for some reason Ford used 2.08 valves until 1987 and then they changed to 1.98 in 1993 they went back to 2.08 so I machined my heads for the bigger valves. The cam is a Federal mogul part #CS1086R it has 204/214 duration at .050 lift and .484 intake and .510 exhaust lift with 112 lobe center not much bigger than stock.
And ny truck has a 5 speed. On mine the exhaust made the biggest difference.

hey rrisdon... what kinda hp and tq numbers you puttin up with that combination. i have a efi 460 in a 95 f350. i have a k&n filter kit long tube headers full 3 inch exhaust eventually changing to dual stacks. i read somewere on here that these efi motors only got like 220rwhp and 360rwtq. i am not sure what mine has with the modifications listed. if you have a guess i'd love to hear it!! thanks

This is just a guess of course but from the reading I have done my year put out 230 rwhp and 390 ft/lbs. Gale Banks sold a kit for mine that he claimed added 90hp and 100 ft/lbs the kit had a intake kit, headers and cat back exhaust. Mine has all that plus the cam and the head work so I'm guessing 325-350 hp and 500-550 tq.

i think about 300 hp would be flywheel... you lose alot through the drivetrane especially with an automatic-somewhere around 25% drive trane loss...more for big tires- so even if it were 350 hp flywheel that would still put you at 280 rear wheel. chassis dyno hp is harder to get than people think. oh and the 230/390 stock is flywheel with accessories and exhaust attached... no drive trane losses taken into account.
