marine kills bear with firewood

Did you guys see where this marine killed a bear with firewood?

Please note that the bear weighed 275 pounds in the original

ajc.com story

http://www.ajc.com/search/content/me...xbear0622.html

and grew to 300 pounds after he was dead in the MSNBC story.

"The youngsters now think their dad is braver than Luke Skywalker. "That's all done with special effects," Jake said. "He killed a bear with his bare hands. He's pretty tough.""

His cooler should have been in the bear box. It is difficult to get out just what you need at the moment tho for some people. He can chalk up that $75 ticket to experience. He was lucky to have killed the bear instead of just making it mad. Taking after the bear with a shovel wasn't a wise idea either. Seems like some wildlife and bear country training for the entire group should be on the agenda before another camping trip. A Marine should know training is always required.

Everhart was later issued a $75 ticket by the U.S. Forest Service for failing to store his food properly "to prevent access by wildlife."

Guys come on it was a lucky throw...YES throw ...hit the bear on the head and it was lights out, not like he attacked the bear.

Definitely a lucky blow.

A 275/300pound bear is a relatively small bear.

I've seen grizzlies in the wild (Alaska).

I hate to see what would have happened if he had missed, and the bear got real aggressive.

Luckily he and his sons didn't end up like Timothy Treadwell and Amie Huguenard; but those were grizzlies.

But he did take the risk to protect his sons, which any parent would do.

That $75 ticket is bogus. Doesn't the Forest Service have anything better to do? The man saved his kids, end of story.

Thank goodness it was a lucky shot or he would have needed to ....find more wood and keep firing away....I think it safe to say all of us would throw anything we could to protect a family member.

Well, they are just plain lucky. We camp up there a good bit. It is primitave camping and no bear boxes available. The campgrounds nearby have also removed the Trash cans (bear proof) and the dumpsters that were well away of the campgrounds due to high activity of bears in the area. The drought is driving them lower and lower in search of food!

You now have to haul your trash out with you. The sheriff in the area along with DNR are issuing citations if you leave your food out in the open at night.

A friend of mine is considering bringing a Knaack Box, for food storage, the next time we going camping.

He always brings his .44 magnum, just in case.

Bears have thick skulls, I think he probably clubbed the bear with a stick
instead of throwing a piece of firewood ... still a good feat.

The article did say: "He hurled the log and knocked the bear in the head. The hungry heavyweight went down in one blow."

He may have clubbed the bear while it was down.

It was not a big bear, at 275 lbs.

Maybe the bear was sick.

A necropsy, if one is administered, may tell more.

Bottom line, the dad and kids are safe.

ANYONE stupid enough to NOT follow the rules of camping while in bear country deserves the ticket, and much more than a measley $75. This is a severe problem as bears are scavengers, will look for the easy meal, and then become 'trained' to scavenge around human campsites. They then lose their fear of humans becoming very dangerous. End result: either dead/maimed people and/or dead bears.

People need to learn to read and follow wilderness rules to minimize confrontations with wildlife! We are in THEIR house.........THEIR rules...... DUH ! ! !
