my brother has an 05 4.2 single cab, and when he puts it in gear w/ foot on brake and turns on the a/c there is somewhat of a loud tapping sound that is being made. when he turns the a/c off nothing. We reve the engine in park (with a/c off) and no tapping sound what so ever, but when put in gear and foot on the brake and revs it with a/c on, loud tapping sound comes back. With a/c off and in gear w/foot on brake while reving the engine the tap is slightly , slightly noticible. So apparently this happens only while in drive and more noticeable with a/c becouse one can here it loudly when he comes and goes. any input appreciated before going to dealer, Truck has 23000 mi thanx
Well to rule out the horrible I'd take the biggest screwdriver that you have and place the tip against the engine, and the base against your ear. If you hear no tapping at various places then the engine isn't knocking. If you do try to find where it is loudest. Once you've tracked that down you should be fine. Also check the serpentine belt. Might be something there. If nothing from those two checks then I've got nothing.

Update;
Brother took truck in to ford when I posted this on here and they told him all this BS that it was normal engine sound and so forth, well he took it in today and he realy told off the service adviser how no other v6 has that loud azz tapping sound ,that sounds so loud at the drive through-that it was embarrsing, told adviser to drive it to a drive through and lo and behold he did. Hour later called my brother up and told him that they were on the "hotline" with ford and were authorized to install a new engine block in the truck. Tech had said they dropped the oil pan and found a bunch of crap inthere. Truck is a 05 stx v6 auto 30,000 mi Will post more info as this is all that they told my bro.
