I have 2001 f150 5.4 with 73000 miles and I was thinking about getting some of that high milage 75000 oil for it. Currently I am using motorcraft 5w20 from walmart and it seems to be OK.
It is a gimmick but it really works. I know there are a million or at least 2 threads on here about oil life. But my view is that conventional oil is good for about 6-10k miles depending on circumstances. I drive the poo out of my 97 4x4 4.6 and it has 211k miles with no problems and I have always changed my oil between 6-10k miles and always used 5W30 conventional. I have seen tests where they test conventional oil after 8k miles and it still has 40% of its lubricating capabilities left and it is safe for our motors.
I work with a guy who formerly worked for an oil company and he has informed me that a full synthetic oil will basically last forever, it never breaks down the molecules forever reform. It just gets dirty and needs to be changed for that reason. He drives a GM with that laser oil life system on it. He uses half synthetic and half conventional and his truck tells him to change it around 16k thousand miles, as he says "I don't want to run full synthetic because I want to change it at least occasionally." He's up to 40k miles on his truck and only changed the oil twice, talk about saving some $.
It couldn't hurt anything to run it, but I wouldn't pay extra for it. My truck has 320k miles on it and does just fine on regular oil. I change it every 3000 miles and don't lose any sleep over it. Oil is cheap. Engines are expensive. The best thing to do is get an oil analysis done every oil change for a year to see how far you can go, then do one or two a year thereafter and look for changes in the findings to see if you need to change your routine.
What GM car has a "laser oil life system"? I've never heard of any such thing. Every GM vehicle I know of uses a formula that takes into account temperature, rpm, load, etc. to make an educated guess at when it should be changed.

Does this oil really work or is it a gimmick?
Motorcraft is an extremely good oil, IMO you would be downgrading if you went with the HM oil. Many instances there have been people with up to 200k on 5w20 motorcraft oil. Stick with a winner.
I switched to MC 5w30 last September and have been running for about 10k miles and have had no major issues. I have 202k on my 97 F150 4.6. I am waiting for the truck to cool down so I can change the oil.
Silver you are right it is all computer software running on logarithms. My mistake, what was I thinking listening to a GM driver any ways??
Still pretty neat, keeps track of engine revolutions, load on the engine, and all sorts of fun stuff.
From the 3 gm's i have driven of friends of mine, a 2wd 2500 hd 6L work truck, a 4wd 2500 hd 6L fully loaded luxury version, and a 2wd 1500 Yukon XL. They have alot of neat little features multiple trip counters, timers, just little things like that. Nothing worth buying one of their vehicles for though ha ha.
I love it every time my friend with the 4x4 2500HD 6.0L says my F150 w/ the 4.6 and 211k feels faster.

Those neat little things that few people use are part of the reason a $15k truck costs us $40k now days. My father-in-law has an 03 or 04 Duramax and it has more bells and whistles than you could ever hope to use.
i've been running pennzoil's high vehicle mileage 10w30 oil for the past.. 4 changes or so. i don't know if it was the 10w30 or the 'high vehicle mileage' but my 4.6 runs much smoother now. It boosted the mpg a mile or so, and there was a slight tapping on the passenger side of the engine that went away. next oil change i'm puttin this stuff in my 2.3L ranger. Maybe it'll quiet that ol' rattley thing down a little bit.
btw, i change oil everything 5K to 7.5K depending on how many trips up north i do. I do mostly freeway driving back and forth to work.
