I'm trading my 2000 f-150 longbed in for a 2007. And no its not a straight across trade. I need new headlights and a hood. I'm not a hard core truck guy, but I had someone mention aftermarket parts as a way cheaper way to go over the dealer. What am I sacrificing? I'm all about saving a dollar. If aftermarket parts are okay, who sells them or are they all on the internet? Any better companies then others? Any help would be great.
normally the parts you buy from the dealer came from the manufacture and are original. I would assume a dealer will sell you a hood built in th eford factory. Aftermarket normally means the part was copied and built in china or tiawan. it iwll be closem but sometimes dont fit exactly right. you have to determine if getting parts for 1/2 price is "close enough" in the fit. gap between the hood and fender might not be as good on the after market parts.... now on light bulbs or brake shoes, i think the aftermarket parts at Aoto Zone or NAPA are not much different than what you get at the dealer.... i bought a front wheel hub off e-bay for 4 x 4 for $90. i know Auto Zone wanted $200. not sure what FORD wants... its your choice.. consider the quality of each part.
that part off of ebay could've been a Ford part though... but generally speaking aftermarket is more universal in sizes... while factory is well... it'll fit and look like it came from the factory...
In body panels there are several different levels of aftermarket. There are CAPA certified parts that are build on OEM tooling and there are Taiwan parts that are formed on a tree stump with a plastic hammer. The tooling used for CAPA parts is worn beyond what the OEM considers usable, but the parts are usually just fine except for some tiny detail that most people don't even know is there.
As far as I'm concerned CAPA will serve your purpose every bit as good as OEM. Some of the better non-CAPA are also quite a good deal, ie. Certifit, Keystone, etc.
Visit your local FORD dealership body shop. Some of those guys squirrel back slightly damaged parts that can be had for a song!
Instead of buyingnew ford factory parts, or new aftermarket parts, maybe try a junkyard. You could find a good used factory ford hood, and just get it painted
Used hoods in TN listed on http://www.car-part.com/ with no damage are $150 - $250. CAPA hoods from http://www.certifit.com/ , shop price $79.50/list $103.35 .......Unfortunately there's no Certifit in TN so you're looking at freight too or they may deliver to some TN locations.
I checked with the Certifit in St. Louis and they have the headlights and hood for the cheapest price around. Heaplamps are 25 bucks a piece. I hope thier not stolen. Hood is only 80 dollars. They will not ship and are closed on saturday so its going to be a pain in the butt to get them but with the money i'm saving is worth it. It takes about 3 hours to get there from here.
Thanks for the help.
