This is the last time I buy a truck in peices. I have the cab on, Front end on, and running boards on. I test fit the new bed and it fit well after you answered a question for me. Now I put the drivers side rear fender on and more trouble. The fender overlaps the running board by 1 3/4 inches. I guess I need to know, 1 Is there different lenght running boards?
2 Are there different fenders ? Although mine line up with the bolt holes in the bed.
The running boards fit well under the cab and to the front fender.
The wheel centers in the rear wheel opening fairly well.
And the frame of the truck has never been cut back there.
You can see the rear fenders in my gallery where I first bought the truck, I think they are right. I know the bed in the pics is wrong thats why I bought the new one.
Please help the dumb guy again
Thanks
It sounds like you have long bed running boards. While they may not fit your short bed, they are worth a fortune to the right person, if they are in decent shape. They are not available aftermarket. Someone with a long bed can measure theirs and tell us if this is the case.
You may be able to get what new RB's will cost you (or almost that much) for those boards. Or, do a swap with someone in the opposite position?
Hello out there you long bed guys. Look what I got. They are in great shape except for two small holes drilled in them for I don't know what.
I usally don't get breaks like that but I guess it could happen
Thanks again guys, I will have to dedecate my truck to all of you all.
I doubt your fenders are the issue and agree with the others that the running boards are probably for a long bed.
I almost ran out to the garage to measure my long bed RB's before I remembered that I towed my truck to California in March and it isn't in the garage!
The long bed frame rails will extend roughly 8 feet from the back of the cab, while the short bed rails go about 6 ft. If your bed cross members, tailgate, and front bed panel are ~54 inches wide, they are also for a long bed. If they are ~48 inches wide they are for a short bed.
Hope that helps.
And ditto what Randy Jack said about value. DON'T CUT THEM if they are long bed boards. You can sell a set of crappy long bed boards for about the cost of a new set of short bed boards. They are indeed rare.
I just looked at your gallery and those look like long bed sides with the wheel tubs. Short bed sides don't have those recessed wheel areas. And the front bed panel looks like it's from a long bed as well...it has the long bed ribs.
It's hard to tell from the pictures if those long bed sides have been cut down to short bed length by somebody. The top of the bedsides do not look stock for 53-56.
I think we're are looking at the wrong gallery. A later gallery shows a brand new Northern Classics Ford short box. I think that's what Showpanther is trying to fit the boards to. At least that's my guess.
The other bed wasn't even a Ford bed. To my knowledge, Ford never made a bed with flat rails like that. Looks like a Chevy bed to me. That one is/was for sale.
Your right. That old bed is one the PO was going to try to fit on the truck. I bought a new Northern Classic bed for the truck. I have the bed slid back now but I will put pics in my gallery of the running boards in a minute.
Don't know for sure, boys, but I think the long bed running boards are more than 2 inches longer thant he short boards. I think they should be noticeabel by the eye. How much longer is the bed in a long bed? then the running boards should be proportional as well......
Long bed is 2 feet longer than the short bed, but I don't think it's all in the running boards. I think there's also more length in the bedsides aft of the wheels.
Donnie,
Below are some dimensional sketches of the 6 1/2' and 8' beds.
I think Abe is right. If the relative placement of the fenders to the rear axle is the same for both the 6 1/2' and 8' beds, the running boards would be 8" longer due to the difference is wheelbase (110" vs. 118").
