In the middle of the motor swap, ran into some trouble.... (of course)
Well ive been workin on this engine swap for about 3 weeks now. Ive got a strait 6 with a 4 speed that burns more oil than gas, and wont go over 60. So i figured its time for a new motor. I picke dup a 88 302 EFI out of a grand marquis for $350. Its got 108,600 miles on it and (guaranteed) to run great and not smoke. I ripped off all the EFI crap on it and converted it to carb. I got a edelbrock performer intake, edelbrock 600 cfm performer carb, edelbrock air cleaner, and pace setter headers. I had to changed the flywheel, oil pan, oil sump, motor mounts, radiator, distributor, coil, cap and rotor, plugs and wires, and timing chain and i put all new gaskets and seals on it, except for the heads. I painted the valve covers and the dist. ford blue. Which looks awsome by the way and ill get some pics up soon. Anyways..... i pulled the 6 out yesterday. Switched over the bellhousing, bought a new clutch, and started to drop it in. The first problem,i notcied was that i have a manual clutch. The clutch linkage has a piece that threads into the side of the block on the 6, right about in the middle of the bellhousing. The 302 does not have this. Found out that there is a bracket that mounts to the bellhousing to fix this. So i thought everything was good, so put the motor in but it sat to low and too far forward. Another set back. After looking at another truck i realized that there are brackets that go from the stock holes in the crossmemeber that actually will move the engine back and lift it up some. I did a lot of research but could not find this mentioned anywhere on many different forums. The problem i see which i think is kind of weird is that these perches are bolted on the passenger side, but have rivets on the drivers side....??? Anyone know why this is? And The truck i was lookin at was a 91, would the older trucks have bolts on both sides?? Or maybe would the dealer have them? Anyone who has done this please help me out. Thanks.
If one side was bolted on, Ford figure it might need to be removed for some reason or some one needed to remove it and put bolts in place of new rivots. I would think the easiest method would be to pull a 302 crossmember, it should bolt right into your frame. Otherwise you will need a set of the taller perches and do a little work to put them in the right place.
Well i got the motor in, runs awsome got everything hooked up and ran into very few problems. Ill get some pics up when i find my camera. But anyways i have one more problem and need some help. I have a 4speed with a manual clutch. On the six, the clutch assembly has a piece (almost like a pivot point with a bushing on the end of it) that threads into the block and holds the clutch linkage in place. The 302 has a bracket that bolts to the bellhousing. I need that bracket. I called JBG and they didnt have it, went to all my local junkyards, no luck, and called the dealer and they said they stopped making them and no one has them. So any ideas??!! Need some kind of help here.
keep that 300-6 because at some point you may wanna rebuild it and throw back in there. I would almost trade my efi 5.8 for that motor its really that good.
as for the bracket check out some f150's as well but look older going back into the 70's. i wanna say my 390 used something like that as well when i did that swap into a 73 hiboy.
