While browsing through a junkyard (no I won't tell you) I found an Excursion, sitting there needing love. Before I knew it I was crawling all over and under it to locate the problems and guess on solutions.
2000 V10 4x4 auto 170,866 mi
right front major damage confined to suspension: right axle side pushed back 3 inches (rt spring bent, front and rear shackles broken but axle appears sound) steering box shaft snapped off and a small amount of frame bend. rt fender, hood (after accident damage), rt door all need replacing from the tire getting pushed back.
engine and accs appear to be in good shape with no damage at all.
body in great shape excluding what appears to be some parking lot damage and some small roof dents, apparently from using the luggage rack.
It runs (so says the yard) and lot drives (no steering) and really looks great all things considered (aside from the rt corner).
the yard is asking 3700 for the vehicle and offering a deal on the major replacement parts.
I'm figuring it was totaled because of mileage and the frame being bent.
It sounds like more trouble than it's worth unless you consider your time to be worth little. There is a decent amount of labor involved in fixing that.
I'd snag it. Offer $3500 but $3700 is still pretty good based on your description.
Cut the front clip off and put on an 05 front clip. There's a guy here who did just that.
Make sure you check the transfer case. I had an accident with damage like you describe and it pushed the front driveshaft back enough that it cracked the X-fer case housing.
if you got the pockets for a project, this is a great opportunity. I bet you could have a really cool, one-off custom Excursion for about $6000 to 8000. Wish I could find a "find" like that.
Better off put a 08 front, just to see what it looks like. What are you planning on doing with this truck, parts or to repair it? If it was me and the truck was in good condition and well taken care of before the crash (oil, maintainence, etc) id deff snag it. The mileage wouldn't scare me. You could easily turn this into a awesome project vehicle if you have the resources and time.
I wasn't talking about body parts. I was talking about the front axle, coil suspension, radius arms and boxed frame section from an 05+ Super Duty. Sorry if I didn't make that distinction. Course...then you'd have to swap out the older model Sterling and put in the 05+ Super Duty to make the wheels match.
I do believe in bringin dead things back to life. But i'd like to truly know what the cost of that would be. Wife and i looked at an '00 or '01 can't remember that had 155k on it. Drove nice, both city and highway. I was a bit nervous on the millage and right off the bat i plan'd on doing some serious 2.5hr tow's and with no warranty i opted out of buying it. But they were only wanting like $7500 for it. It was a V10 4x4 interior was spotless for the most part for the millage.
