Holley fast idle issues

I have a 351m with a holley 4160 600 carb with electric choke. Here is the problem. My fast idle does not work initially, on the first start of the day. I go outside, pump the throttle, the choke closes, the truck starts, but I have to sit there, with my foot on the throttle, to keep it from dying. After about a couple minutes, I can let off the throttle, and the idle starts to climb to it's 1600 rpm. I go back outside, blip the throttle, and it idles to it's normal warm idle. I drive the truck to school, it sits outside for about 3 hours. I pump the throttle once, and the fast idle works as it should. It works but does not work when the engine is completely stone cold (sitting over night). My choke is set at the last notch (slowest opening).

Sounds like the fast idle cam is sticking. Try spraying some carb cleaner on the choke linkage between the choke cap and the side of the carb.

That definetly worked. How should I keep the mechanism lubed correctly? Sometimes, not only does the fast idle not work, sometimes the choke gets frozen open in extremely cold temps, so I have to push on the flap with my hand.

I have learned over the years that spraying lube on the linkage will make it gum up faster. So just the seasonal spray down with carb cleaner works the best for me.

I believe your problem is your choke setting. I have an 86 460 with a 4160 600 CFM Holley. I run a lean choke setting & on cold mornings (20 degrees) or colder I have to do the same thing. With a rich setting believe it or not I don't have that problem but I also drop about .5/gal in gas mileage. Using the marks on the chock isn't always right. You can PM me if you want to talk more on this.
