Need pedal to the metal ?

I have a 98 Explorer with a manual transmission. In order for me to start the car I have to really lay on the gas. Once I'm driving, every time I push in the clutch, the car shuts off. I have to stay on the gas in order for me to drive. Any ideas?

140,000. It has a new fan belt, relaltively new spark plugs/wires, new air filter, and fresh oil.

Yes, when was the last time you changed the fuel filter and cleaned the AIC?

air input control, it is a small cylindrical device with a wired terminal, if you have an X engine it is on the driver side of intake manifold just behind the Throttle body.

Actually I think it's "Technically" called an IAC - Idle Air Control, but different manufacturers of the part may call it different things.

You could try cleaning yours... but it's usually a temporary fix.

Good luck.

First thing I would check would be fuel filter and then check fuel pressure. If either the fuel filter or the fuel pressure regulator is clogged, you could have this happen. You can pick up a filter for less than $10.00, and a lot of places will check your pressure for free.
