Just curious, when i first bought my truck 65 4x4 it needed lots of maint. I have done just about everything to the front axel you could think of, new axel seals, axel bushings, felt wipers, spindels & bearings. Usually when i ask this question i get the 1,000 yd stare so you guys could be my last chance at sanity. Here goes, Every time i pull the front hubs there is gear oil laying in the bottom them ?
Well here goes a guess for you. Is it possible the grease is breakin down into two parts? A thicker grease and the biproduct from high tempertures of the hub bearings. I do have to ask if you have used different greases with the same temperture ratings also. I found a similar thing on my 2 wheel drive front hubs until I changed to higher temp rated grease. The hubs on a 4 wheel drive have a set of yokes, for lack of better word, that isolate the axle lube.
Thanks airharley, I use high temp wheel bearning grease, the yokes are just a brass bushing / guide & are not tight around the axel they dont seal out oil.
Thanks Roger
This is normal. gear oil comes from the axle knukle that houses the axle shaft u joint. Gear oil is in this knukle to lubricate u joint, knukle bearings and spindal bushing. Don't worrie about it as long as there are no external leaks.
vananda4v Thanks, I never heard about the spindal bushings but makes sense, I always wondered if the gear oil would mix with bearing oil & thin it out?
Yes it may thin out the grease but its always lubricated. Tip: always pack axle bearings with a little grease to insure they will not burn out. Also I've seen a lot of rear ends accumalate rust in them with synthitic oils. Why? More so in minn here.
Thats funny, the last time i worked on the front end i took the locking hubs & axel bearings apart & was amazed at how well they are built & ease of maint. And i did pack them with a little grease. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Thanks Again
