I am restoring a 1941 Ford Truck and have a 1986 Ford Mustang that I am using as a doner - I have taken the flat head out and plan on replacing it with the Mustang's 302 5.0 - including the Fuel Injection engine, A/C, Tranny, etc.
I've rebuilt motors before but am not familiar with all this wiring. I am trying to find out what wiring is required, where the best place to find a wiring harness kit would be and what parts might not be required since I am not going to have all the fluff in this truck. I still want to keep the power of the 302 5.0.
Does anyone out there know of any books on this subject or has anyone done a swap like this for a rod car or truck before that can give me advice.
I put a 1990 stang 5.0 fuel injected engine in a 51 F-1. I'm about to do the same for a 40/47 I bought . Also one of my friends is about to put a 86 FI 302 in a 66 falon. If you have some Questions about the installation let me know. I don't clame to know much about the installation but my be I can help.
f100drivr, did you use an aftermarket wiring harness or did you use the stock one? if it was stock what did you leave in and take out? if aftermarket what brand and how much did it cost? I have a 40 I want to take out a supercharged 454 and put in a 5.0 HO from a mustang everything I can find on this says I have to use a mustang computer (engine doesn't matter) with aftermarket wiring harness Ron Francis wants 550.00 for a harness. thanks for any light you can shed on these projects.

I installed a 92 5.0 EFI(Mustang) engine in my 54 f100.
I used the original computer and engine portion of the wiring harness from the Mustang.
To make it more complicated, I used an 86 tbird steering column with crusie built-in, and was able to successfully wire the delay wipers, cruise control, etc.
I recommend using an oem wiring harness, as it has the relays for fuel pump, etc. I didn't disconnect any of the engine wires from the engine during the transfer.

The 1990 5.0 you used has the mass air flow system in it. The 1986 5.0 I'm putting in my 41 Truck doesn't. Is your friend that's putting the 86 302 in his Falcon adding the mass air flow? If not, is he using an aftermarket wiring harness? Which one and can he let us know how it hooked up - did he have any problems hooking it up without the mass air flow.
The harness I used came from street & performance.I think it cost 450.00 . When I got the eng it was just the eng I had no harness. When I first got the harness made it was for speed density. One of my friends had told me the mass air was better ( for hot rodding )So I tok the harness back & had it fixed for mass air. The harness worked great every wire was labeled & there was only 3 wires that had to be wired one to the Ing one to the neutral safty switch & one to the fuel pump.
If you have the complete doner car you can use the original wiring harness.I'll get the directions from my buddy with the failane & let you know what you can get rid of & what to keep.
I need the measurements of an original 1940 ford truck frame (1/2 ton )Width & length.
f100drivr, I will go see if the guy I bought my truck from still has the frame he usually doesn't get rid of anything till the project is finished hopefully it is still there somewhere.

We were looking through the Chassis Engineering book tonight & noticed that they have different bolt on parts for the 41 than for the 40. Since ours is a 41 and that's the measurements we gave you, you may want to still find someone with a 40 frame to make sure that they are the same. We believe they are, but not sure.
